I read in a post here that the 80YW was full of small interesting battles; John Childs says in "Warfare in the 16th C." that most battles of the 30YW were small bashups around towns and areas of supply to restrict the enemy and provide for your own. There are loads of great sources for lesser known battles of the ECW, and I'm wondering if there are some good ones for smaller actions of the 80YW and 30YW. The big battles are somewhat exceptional, so I'm especially interested in the smaller fights. Thoughts and sources appreciated! |

One of the battles/ multiple skirmishes I know of is the Conquest of the Veluwe, between 21 July and August 1629.(Netherlands) The Siege of 's Hertogenbosch was going on, and using most of the army. To divert some attention, the Imperial/Spanish forces launched an attack on the Veluwe area. This is a larger area in the middle and eastern parts of the current day Netherlands. In this conquest multiple smaller sieges, attacks, battles and lot of skirmishes and pillaging missions took place. - The defense/attack of the bridgehead in Brummen - Siege/Attack on Hattem - Siege/Attack on Amersfoort - Pillaging on Ede, Lunteren, Barneveld, Scherpenzeel (smaller towns back then) - And lot of smaller engagements. I was planning on doing some of these battles with Pikemans Lament, and was writing a blog. Have now quickly released this, with some more information. Blog Post In Dutch it is more easy to find some sources. The Wikipedia page provides already a basic overview. Wikipedia I also found a page with a listing of different battles at the end of the 80YW. Land battles 80 years' war after the truce Also the compare the list of battles during the 80YW on wikipedia of the Dutch and English version. The Dutch is considerable longer and encloses also the smaller battles. Dutch list English list I hope this provides some beginning |

You could ask this question at the 80YW.org facebook group for more answers I suspect. |

I found this book in Amsterdam in English but I think you can get it on Amazon or ABE books. The Dutch Wars of independence, warfare and commerce in the Netherlands 1570-1680. Has a lot of accounts of small battles not in incredible detail but probably enough to put together some scenarios. |

Didn't Stephen Danes author a set of rules for battles in this era; as well as a another set covering small actions (and with scenarios)? Of course, I can't remember the titles. Of course …Father Tilly, and Escalade, respectively.

I heard a rumor that the Pike and Shot Society wrote a renaissance rules et that was few or no casualties and mostly morale based. Anyone come across those? |
