What is your favorite WWII engagement involving airborne soldiers (paratroopers, glider infantry, Fallschirmjaegers, etc.)? Regardless of whether the troops performed an air assault or not. |

I've had the good fortune to tour Crete, Arnhem and Eben Emael. Thre's something novel, desperate and heroic about Op Granite. Those particular tiny gliders dropping on that magnificent fortress was something else. |

Market Garden. I remember one Historicon we actually put 6 tables end to end and ran the whole thing from Eindhoven to Arnhem in 6mm. I love it because it has everything! Elite paras and SS to penal companies, beute panzers to Fireflys and King Tigers and IIRC a Nashorn even made an appearance. Soooo much cool stuff! Lots of fodder for smaller scenarios and being an admitted WWII movie buff loved A Bridge Too Far and the Band of Brothers episodes especially the battle of Neunan (sp?). Probably the most balanced campaign in NW Europe even more so than the Bulge. And if I had to pick a single battle Pegasus Bridge in 28mm or back to the movies the final battle in Saving Private Ryan. Pure fiction true but great gaming nonetheless with Paras, Rangers, SS and even Tigers who could want more fun toys on the table! Cheers! |

I have to go with Lee494 and Market Garden. So much cool stuff going on and the 'What Ifs?' couldn't be bigger or more fascinating. And it was the one Allied airborne operation which had the potential to actually change the course of the war. |

All my favourites ones are related to Normandy: Pegasus Bridge, Merville Battery, the defense of the airborne bridgehead by the 6th British Airborne, La fiere, St. Mere Eglise and Carentan. |

Moscow, but mostly Korsun (The Great Bukrin Bend). Dropping paratroops on Panzer Divisions was a bad idea in 1943. You'd think that somebody might have heard about that and not tried it again in 1944. |

Many choices really ! But Crete & Market Garden … And the unit I was assigned to in the early '80s, the 187. With the 101, made 2 drops during the Korean War. They also landed with the USMC at Inchon.
The 187 was with the 11th ABN in the PTO during WWII. And later became part of the 101 around the time of the Vietnam War. Was at Hamburger Hill too … |

Los Banos Philippines Feb. 23, 1945 (elements 1st BN 511 PIR, 11th ABN). One of the DZs at Ft. Campbell, KY is named Los Banos. After that Op. As I said my unit, 3/187, with the 101 was that was part of the 11th ABN in WWII. The other 2 Bns in 3/101 was 1st & 2d 503. That made the drop on Corregidor, PI. During the reconquest of the PI, in '44-'45.
The 503d was an independent PIR in PTO. The 11th ABN was the 187, 188 and 511 PIRs in WWII. When I was with the 101, '80-'83. 3d Bde of the 101 was made up of 3/187, 1/503, 2/503. All served in the PTO. And were not with the 101 in WWII. The Bns in 1st & 2d Bdes of the 101 were all part of the Div in WWII. |

Market Garden is more of a campaign than a battle, but absolutely my favorite action. Bastogne is next, mostly because of my High School teacher who was there. |

Market Garden and Bastogne – I worked with a gentleman who was in the 506 from D-Day till the end of the war. My Father in Law was 35th Infantry Division and was sent north by Patton to help relieve Bastogne and ran into a boyhood friend who was with the 101st in Bastogne. I always thought when you hear their stories about the war these engagements become some of your favorites since they become more personal knowing they were there. |
