We discussed the historical battles that people are tired of because they are played over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. And over. What about non-historical battles? Through experience, I can assert that non-historical "standard" battles exist. I've seen them recurring at various cons. But maybe it's not as big a phenomenon because of wider variety. Or maybe it's worse because of the number of systems (If you want to play SnorkFork Fantastic Battles instead of a different system, you gotta play this battle.). Maybe some system's "starter set" battle? Maybe something from a movie or novel? Maybe nothing … I didn't have a historical battle like that. But for whatever reason, I am just NOT playing another Moon of Endor Ewoks vs the Empire. |

The good thing about fictional battles is that the order of battle can be very fluid! We have a 'canned' fictional battle about a meeting engagemetn at a crossroads that we call Horner's Corner's – so far have used it for SYW, Napoleonica, ACW and WWII |

If you are a ACW gamer you have tons of scenarios to choose from. You could play a game every week for several years and not repeat one. |

Borodino. It's such a slugfest frontal assault, with not much ability to alter that avenue of approach. Just about any battle of the 1809 Austrian campaign for much of the same reasons as Borodino. That said, if it's on the table and I don't have choice game on! |

The infamous "patrol encounter" I see most people play when testing a ruleset for the first time and many times when they play it the first three times. - Easy Eight WW2: First scenario is always two or three squads with a vehicle for each side. Each side deploys in their side of the board and they run to the center to kill each other. - Bolt action ww2: Same as before - Troop Weapons and Tactics: exactly the same - Chain of command: Guess what? - Impetvs: Ah, an ancients game where you have plenty of battles to choose from. Why are there two lines of enemies one in front of another in their sides of the board? - Xwing vs Tie-Fighter: No need to tell you. - General de Brigade: Napoleonics, hundreds of scenarios and battles to be chosen. Wait, why are you deploying the same number of battalions, guns and cavarly on each side of the board?. - Lets play any other ruleset!: For the first escenario we will play…. oh, my…. |

Wait. You're telling me that "Moon of Endor Ewoks vs the Empire" isn't historical?!!! Just to be clear, I mean Ewoks helping Rebels get past the Empire into the bunker to shut down the force field. I would happily play the Empire raiding the Ewok tree city. |

"I would happily play the Empire raiding the Ewok tree city." Yessir, that would be a rockin' good time. "Civilize 'em with an AT-AT." |

Waterloo, I have rarely seen any reeeally early Napoleonic like Napoleon's campaigns in Northern Italy, 1805, or 1806-07. If you get away a little from the actual history and get more involved in what could've happened instead of what actually happened. Also, what about some smaller scale engagements in Germany circa 1809, you got Swedes, Dutch, Westphalians, French, Austrians, The Black Duke, von Schill, and if you're really adventurous you could have the Brits come off Walachern and attempt to link up with the Allies. |
