Looking for some good, Spring/Summer fiction, and am wondering which books, and/or series of books David Drake has written that people like?

Obviously, his Hammer's Slammers books have won wide acclaim, but I'd like to know which series, and/or books you like best from him?

I'm interested in his accounts of armored battles, primarily, but also other stuff too, e.g. space battles, etc., as well.

Has he written any other books on Sci-Fi combat (especially armored combat) not in the Hammer's Slammers series?

Suggestions for other authors writing similar accounts of Sci-Fi armored combat would be appreciated too (blower – air-cushioned vehicles, anti-grav vehicles, and even tracked ones are of interest if in a Sci-Fi setting).

Slammers are mostly short stories, but Paying The Piper is a great entry point and a novella to boot. You won't regret buying the three volume collection of all the stories however.

Drake's standalone novels have plenty of action. Check out Redliners or Starliner. For some novels that reference the Slammers but aren't part of the series, try Cross the Stars or The Sharp End.

There's also the RCN (Royal Cinnabar Navy) series, which is Aubrey-Maturin in space.

Here's a list of all his series: link

Really enjoyed The Sharp End.

I recommend all of them…yeah, that's probably not helpful.

Check out the Baen Free Library: link
Look for John Ringo (start here: link
It's more small teams in power armor blowing away hordes of stupid alien nasties and the series follows a family of super warriors. I liked it.

Drake's Tank Lords (first of the Slammers books, I think): link

pick up a copy of the collection 'GRIMMER THAN HELL'. It's worth it just for the first six stories: 'The Fleet' series.

"The Sharp End" was good but I started with "At Any Price" and thought it was a good jumping off point. My personal favorite was "Crossing the Stars."

Yep, with all the Slammer stories including some pics, and a few new stories.

I am a Slammer's fan … I have a Slammer's TF in 6mm …

Ensign Leary RCN series

Redliners is little-known and not considered one of his best, but I loved it. Much more … human? … than some of his work. Grim, but hopeful.

Rolling Hot is has good re-read value and showcases his tech upgrades of the Slammer's equipment. The original book 'Hammer's Slammers'' is a terrific short story book with asides by the author explaining the technology and organization. It also details the universe in where the stories take place. Trust me, these books are worse than potato chips.

David Drake is one of my favorite writers, Hammers Slammers is my favorite, and cheap on Kindle. The RCN books are good nautical pulp fun imho.

But he also wrote my least favorite book, his stand alone alternate history Fortress. It is when he was going through a "no chapter break" phase. Ymmv

I second the vote for the Ensign Leary RCN series.

Forlorn Hope. Non-Slammers armor story. That and Rolling Hot are my two favorites. Check out the Conquerors'series he did with S.M. Stirling. Using the history of Belisarius on a 19th cent tech planet, computers turned into religion, giant dogs replacing horses, and dinosaurs. What's not to like?

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.

I will check them out.

I've read some of them, eons ago, but can't recall which ones now.

Thanks for the photo of the 6mm Slammer army too. The vehicles and troops look really great!

I need some of those.
