*(ignore the "bug" post above).

When my current War of the Roses project is done I'm considering finally getting into Renaissance gaming. It's something I've wanted to do for at least the last 10 years.

Of all the 17th Century Wars I'm currently most attracted to the ECW. I'd like to build both the forces for a single historical battle rather than building generic armies for the period.

I'm looking for a historical battle that when gamed is well balanced for both sides as I'm planning to use it as an introductory game for people new to gaming (and as a way to learn Pike & Shotte rules).

I'm hoping the forum might have some suggestions. The couple Ospreys I have for this War are battles that aren't very balanced or were landslides historically (Dunbar, etc…).

Thanks for any tips.

U.K.

Ain't no such thing.

Well there were several battles that were 'draws' more or less. Edgehill, 1st and 2nd Newbury come to mind. Though 2nd Newbury wasn't really balanced in terms of forces, but due to the lack of coordination between the Parliamentarian armies. Ie scenario- dependent I suppose.

Timbo, First Newbury is the closest I've seen to what I'm looking for so far, thanks.

The campaigns of Hopton and Waller make for interesting games and these armies are much smaller than those at First Newbury.

Even if you follow historical OOB you will end up with forces that are generic, to a degree.

I think we know most about the armies that fought at Cropredy Bridge, in terms of flags and coat colours, but they are far from balanced.

Which ever forces you choose, with the exception of Edgehill, you will need a very high percentage of cavalry to match a historical OOB especially if you model the main Oxford Royalist army. This had close to equal numbers of horse to foot, possibly even more horse than foot at times.

I saw the numbers of Cav at 1st Newbury Timmo. The high % is all good with me. I don't mind painting lots of horse units.

I'll look up the other 3 battles you mentioned, thank you very much.

I agree with the Waller/Hopton idea as you can turn it in to a whole campaign. Cavalier / Partizan Press do a great Campaign book as part of their ECW scenarios series.

I second CtG's suggestion; I have that Partisan Press book and although I haven't worked through it, it strikes me as a great campaign.

Cropredy Bridge is fairly well balanced and is one of those rare meeting engagements. There are a good amount of tactical options with reasonable sized forces.

Thanks Lads!

Ended up choosing 1st Newbury. It has a good balanced army list for each side w/out any tweaking.

The only difficult part of putting the battle together will be the number of hedge rows and lanes on the north side of the map.

Still, a great suggestion. Interesting units at the battle. Thanks all for the help.
