"During an interview with the Financial Times in March, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was asked how he felt about China's treatment of Uighur Muslims. He replied, "Frankly, I don't know much about that," suggesting that he was unqualified to comment. Maybe he does not know anything about the religious minority. But it is also a subject that is conspicuously avoided in Pakistani journalism. None of the media outlets have covered the persecution of Uighur Muslims in China's Xinjiang province.

Muhmmad Zaman, an opinion contributor to Pakistan's Express Tribune newspaper, tweeted, "For the last several years, my op-eds have appeared every Tuesday in the Tribune, except today when I wrote about Uighurs. I was told my op-ed was being "pulled out" because of the sensitivity of the matter. He then published it on Twitter instead…."

The Uighurs are in the unenviable position of having no allies. Everyone has other beefs with China. Many countries have laws (lookin' at you, 18 U.S. Code § 1091) that *require* them to intercede in cases like this, so if they acknowledge it they'd have to do something that would upset what they're trying to do with/in/about China. So they *have* to turn a blind eye.

Pakistan has many issues with China, including border disputes and wonderful brokers who promise young Pakistani Christian women wealthy Christian husbands in China (which is short of brides), but the husbands turn out to be less than promised. The Uighers are coreligionists, but Pakistan is still not likely to help them.

At 11,000,000 the Uighers are a large group suffering government persecution for many years now, but nothing is going to happen.

To be fair, little is being done, or even mentioned, about the rights of the Chinese people, either.
