I've seen some stunningly beautiful miniatures and models used in wargaming. I myself prefer to play rather than build and so will field many less detailed resin and metal minis with hasty paint jobs.

My question is are you basically a model maker who sometimes games, OR a gamer who focuses on gaming at the expense of gorgeous gaming minis? Now I know some will say "both", which is a good answer.

To simplify the question do you spend more time building your armies or gaming with them? As I age (quickly lol lol) I find my priority has shifted from building to playing. How about you all?

Cheers!

I was a board wargamer for many years and made models as a completely separate hobby. The game and rules mechanics are very important to me, but I take a lot of pleasure painting and modelling for my games. I guess I now play with my models, one big hobby instead of two separate ones.

Modeling more than gaming, but I buy gaming-quality models not super-detailed models with lots of fragile bits.

Calico Bill08 May 2019 2:00 a.m. PST

Gamer. For me, painting minis is a necessary evil 👿.

repaint08 May 2019 2:07 a.m. PST

I look at it this way: I make mainly models that I want to play.

No longer interested08 May 2019 2:31 a.m. PST

More a model maker. I take a lot of pleasure getting a model or a landscape finished. But I also take pleasure gaming with the friends.

Probably 70% painter and model maker, 30% gamer.

Andy ONeill08 May 2019 2:33 a.m. PST

Whichever I'm doing at the time.
I enjoy both.

Both

Bezmozgu708 May 2019 3:32 a.m. PST

Neither and both, but my primary focus is learning about and understanding the military history. The modelling aspect helps me understand the weapons, equipment and terrain of the forces involved/battles fought. The gaming experience helps to understand the tactics and command and control aspects.

Army building, I think. I enjoy it, but the opponent shortage and my difficulties with solo play are factors as well.

FusilierDan Supporting Member of TMP08 May 2019 4:16 a.m. PST

I spend more time painting than playing. Five hours a week vs 3 hours. It's how it works out.

If all my regular friends moved away and I had no one to play with I would still paint.

I paint to an acceptable table top standard but would not consider myself a modeller.

I seen to spend all my time building and painting stuff rather than gaming these days.

advocate08 May 2019 5:48 a.m. PST

Gaming. But I probably paint more than I game. Go figure.

Jeffers08 May 2019 6:00 a.m. PST

Collect, sculpt, model, paint, box, put in loft.

As I said on another forum, I haven't gamed for over a year and don't miss it.

Timmo uk08 May 2019 6:06 a.m. PST

I'd class myself as more of a painter than a model maker. I do both more than I play mainly because I don't have a dedicated gaming space and it's such a pain moving furniture to set up table. One day that may change.

UshCha08 May 2019 6:22 a.m. PST

I do not game I simulate, war gaming rather than Simulation to me is totaly unappealing. I like Bezmozgu7 am into command and control issues and why tactics in the real world are like they are. Simulation with the right system allows you to gain a better understand of this.

Painting, is unquestinably a (Un)neccessary evil and avoided like the plague whenever possible, I weep for the demise and hence stupid price rised of painted Can Do 1/144 models. Sculpting is sometimes an interesting pastime and enough fun to motivate me occatinally to make 3D print masters if there are none available or they are poor for whatever reason.
I do card fold flat terrain as its the only credible way for me to have the amount of scenary needed for a credible simulation within my space budget.

Time wise proably 2 hrs week planning and 6 to 8 hrs playing. Painting only when trully deparate, like now when I need 4 Boxers for my German Army.

Old Wolfman08 May 2019 6:43 a.m. PST

I don't build/paint the tanks and stuff for museum display. Been told my stuff looks playably good(my phrase, but been told similarly by others)

CeruLucifus08 May 2019 6:44 a.m. PST

Both I guess. I like gaming especially with nice miniatures for a 3D effect. I like modeling but lose interest if it's not for a game. I try to produce the nicest miniatures I can.

Personal logo miniMo Supporting Member of TMP08 May 2019 6:45 a.m. PST

I enjoy both, but for many decades have always spent much more time modelling than playing. But I can model and paint just about any time at home, and can only arrange game time once or twice a week!

Personal logo Sgt Slag Supporting Member of TMP08 May 2019 6:56 a.m. PST

Gamer. Un-abashed Dip'er. I have multiple armies painted, table ready, which is more than 1,000 figures, total. Got too many in the painting queue. Realistically, I only expect to live another 20 years, so I need to get busy.

I also game with nicely based, but unpainted, plastic Army Men figures. Played the last game around two months ago: 12 foot by 30 foot table, with around 400 Infantry figures, 30 Tanks, and loads of terrain. Beach assault, fighting up a hill, advancing towards a city. It was grand!

Planning, and preparing, for another game, same size table. This time it will be a city fight, street by street, building by building, with short LOS. Last game, artillery and Tanks, ruled the board. This time, Infantry will come into their own, as it will be up close, and personal, man-to-man. No long range artillery barrages. Turn a corner, and, boom! There they are… Cheers!

wrgmr108 May 2019 9:05 a.m. PST

I spend a lot of time painting 5 hours a week, but only 2-3 hours a week gaming. Preferring to put out nicely painted armies.
So 50-50.

Doug MSC Supporting Member of TMP08 May 2019 9:06 a.m. PST

I enjoy gaming but do spend more time painting and I enjoy that too. I do three periods in 40mm and am always adding to them, 3,000 figures at the moment. I probably have enough terrain that I have built, collected and bought over the years to cover any of the periods I game with. I'm always tempted to do another period but fight off the temptation.

Tgerritsen Supporting Member of TMP08 May 2019 9:28 a.m. PST

Gaming mostly. I enjoy painting when I have time and a good setup. Most of the time, however, I don't. As the kids get older and are moving out, that is starting to shift toward modeling/painting, though I'm still 80/20 toward actually gaming over modeling/painting.

I spend way more time building and painting than gaming.

Then again, I need other players to game and I don't to build and paint. So, when I have the opportunity to do both, I always game instead of build/paint.

I build and paint every day because there is time and opportunity to do so. I game 3-4 times a month on average, though occasionally sometimes up to 8-10 times (holidays, gathering times).

I have no idea what my ratio would be if I had the opportunity to game every day. I can't imagine what that context would be like.

After I gave away my Battle of Puebla armies, it took me a few years to get around to building the Mexicans and French back up. I took no pause in gaming the battle every year just because I didn't have the "right" figures. I think people really got a charge of the battle of "Cinco de Mars-o" with John Carter Red and Green Martians.

BrockLanders08 May 2019 4:08 p.m. PST

I love gaming but with 2 games a month I spend about 90% of my hobby time building models, terrain, painting figs etc.

Striker08 May 2019 5:19 p.m. PST

Building.

Bandolier08 May 2019 6:32 p.m. PST

I put effort into nicely painting and basing armies/units in order to put on nice games. I like playing games to see my nicely painted armies in 'action' on the table. There is a double pay-off for me.

Syrinx008 May 2019 7:59 p.m. PST

I enjoy painting but gaming is my priority.

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP08 May 2019 9:01 p.m. PST

Excellent question. I'm not sure I have a good handle on how much time I send on each category. Under gaming, I include written game preparation, like writing orders, victory conditions, scenario rules, etc. In that case, I may spend more time on gaming than on making things.

Bottom line for me is that I like all aspects of the hobby and don't consider myself more a gamer or more a modeler.

Choctaw09 May 2019 1:30 p.m. PST

Modeling for the most part.

IUsedToBeSomeone11 May 2019 1:24 a.m. PST

Both, I enjoy painting and playing games. Have 4,000 painted figures available to game with at the moment and growing by about a unit a week…

Mostly at this point, I build and paint for the next convention game I'm going to put on.

If the scenario requires a vehicle or a unit of figures that is not available cheaply (which usually means in plastic) in my scale (The One True Scale) I modify figures and/or vehicles/guns etc.

But I don't modify figures or scratch build vehicles just for the heck of it. They have to be for a scenario reason. And I'm not above using the "wrong" tank (PzKw IV F 2 instead of IV G, for example) -- or 1941 German infantry in 1943) if it's a one-time situation.
