I remember reading about that in John Keegan's book on WWI, thinking, "Why have I never heard about this?" It's pretty incredible. I think Keegan estimated that 60,000 soldiers died just in avalanches during the campaign. That's a staggering number, and yet is almost completely lost amidst the then-unrivaled carnage of the war. |
