One of our readers says that The Sword and The Flame plays best with one or two platoons per player. Do you agree? |

We normally try to have 2 platoons (a company) of Imperials or three clans (a tribe) of natives per player. Plus there may be a gun or three for the Imperials and a gun or two for the natives. But then some of our group have been playing TSATF since before its beginning, having helped Larry develop it. Jim |

I would agree that 2 platoons per player is a good size. We've bloated the game up to 6+ platoons for a player and it didn't seem nearly as fun. YMMV of course. |

Ditto ColCampbell. Guy know whereof he speaks. |

We play it just like ColCampbell. |

Our group was also involved with the playtest and 2 Imperial or 3 Native units/player works out just about right. Of course, if you put a dozen players in the game, it might get a bit unwieldy. |

But that's when you need a good gamemaster who can keep things moving. Jim |

We just did a game last Saturday that had five British platoons and three guns. Facing I think it was nine Pathan units and three guns defending a fort and their crops. We had three British and two Pathan players. Had absolutely no problems. It was a lot of fun. We can do almost any size game and have been for years. |

If you're gonna track the names pf each model and properly handle wounded than yes. |

Col Campbell was part of the core group that played with Larry. Equal forces only work when both forces are operating in the European style of training. If one is Euro and one is native, then because of weapon tech alone the natives need to outnumber the Euros. |

I have happy memories of helping Larry and the Jackson Gamers debut TSATF at Widener College. Larry had always wanted a sandtable, but his home in Greensboro NC had his game room in the attic and he feared the weight of such a table might be too much for the floor. After he moved to Mississippi, he continued to think about the ability of a sandtable to present sculpted terrain. That TSATF debut featured his solution – kitty litter terrain ! |

Yes, definitely 1 or 2 platoons per player plus maybe a machine gun or artillery piece should be the maximum for the British. |

It's whatever number you think you can handle. For beginners 1 or 2 platoons would be the way to go but for the well experience players five or six shouldn't be a problem. |
