We are coming close to the endgame in the Westwind campaign as we reach Map 5. Casualties have seen both Russian and German platoons under strength and it's as much a battle to keep your platoon together as it is to defeat the enemy. There is still everything to play for in a great campaign. Full AAR for Scenario 5 Outposts at Linderau here Outposts at Linderau

Again, another fabulous AAR, I shall be twisting my friend's arm for another campaign. I read this from beginning to end with a real sense of excitement. I would comment directly on your blog but don't have a Google account. I am intrigued by your choice of a SMG platoon for a defensive campaign as you often find yourself unable to bring down effective fire at range. |

You have a point about the SMG platoon. In my post about getting ready for this campaign I said this: "I've never played using an SMG platoon before and having painted up some of the exquisite new, SMG-toting Russians from AB Figures it only seemed right I should let them see action. However that it is to speak from my heart, my head is telling me this might not be the wisest of choices. Why? Because this platoon must fight through the entire campaign with only one opportunity to call for replacements. With squads of seven men, as opposed to the rifle platoon with ten men, I might find myself running short of men. That said, those men are well armed, if somewhat short on range, so I will need to find a different tactical approach if they are to last the distance. To be honest I like the challenge, but only time will tell whether I should have listened to my head instead of my heart." I went with my heart instead of my head and made things harder for myself, but nothing ventured nothing gained and it ain't quite over yet! Really glad to hear you are enjoying these reports. |

I have to say I thought using an SMG platoon rather inspired. Rather than trying to game the system (no pun intended) with the perfect unit you go with what fate hands you. I am sure on more than one occasion units not necessarily optimal for a particular task nonetheless found themselves having to carry it out. I am also sure more than one SMG platoon found themselves on the defense. Bravo for taking on the challenge and a very interesting series. |

Thanks and you have a good point. In this campaign the Russians have closed the ring around Königsberg so I would assume the Germans are attacking the Russian assault units, so the fact they are an SMG platoon should not be too surprising. Regardless I've enjoyed the challenge and I've picked up plenty of ideas for how to play the SMG platoon tactically. If nothing else I've enjoyed getting those lovely AB figures on the table. |

I'm glad you played the SMG sections. Many times I thought they could pull a scenario off but then things shifted. Well played a very enjoyable campaign and as mentioned above nice to see the period played and not the rules. |
