Just reading James Hornfischer's excellent "The Fleet at Flood Tide". It is about the Saipan, Tinian, Rota and Guam campaigns. While the successful completion of the Marianas assaults broke the back of the Japanese, I'd cockily submit that the battle that doomed Japan was at Pearl Harbour.
