… into Taiwan.

"The Department of Defense claims the Chinese military is gearing up for a potential invasion of Taiwan, amping up options and reforming military doctrine in order to formally take control of the self-governing island.

A lot of their little "fishing fleet" vessels can carry troops, and they have thousands of those.

Large cargo vessels could too, in a pinch.

Doesn't look good for the Taiwanese, but perhaps this just might be the event that breaks the PLA's grip on power, if things don't go smoothly, and resistance groups use the opportunity to speak and act out against Xi.

I will freely admin that I am not an expert on China or their military. With the size of their military and logistical base, couldn't they just go ahead and do that without any kind of restructuring or reorganization?

GW1 gave China a shock and wake-up call, spurring it to transform its large but low-tech peasants army to a streamlined high-tech automated one like that of the U.S. Everything China does in modernizing its military is with an eye towards countering the United States' so-called "global hegemony."

They still don't have much blue-water naval experience, nor do they have a lot of big-time sealift like LSTs.
