Professional online gamers are lobbying to be recognized as athletes. Similarly, as a miniature wargamer, do you consider yourself to be an athlete?

53% said "no, I am not an athlete"
42% said "this is ridiculous"
3% said "yes, I am a miniature wargaming athlete"

I attended an international ancients miniature tournament a few years ago. Several teams from South Africa and Australia were sponsored by their National Sports Federation.
They said like chess strategy games were considered table sports.

Being recognized as a table sports player is not being considered an athlete.

You're only an athlete if your discipline makes you sweat.

These are games. Chess is a game. Sports are also a type of game. Game is the overarching category. There should be National Games Federations

Yeah, when they recognize chess as an athletic event, then I am an athlete, 65 years old, grey, and balding, with a pot belly and flat feet. Get my Spandex body suit!!!!

Most of us are out of breath simply getting on to the step to receive our gold medals.

Does lifting a pint count as a sport?

von Schwartz05 May 2019 5:30 p.m. PST

Or perhaps the one arm curl.

Old Wolfman06 May 2019 7:27 a.m. PST

I wouldn't think of myself as athletic,as far as tabletop gaming is concerned. But that's just me,and remembering George Carlin's famous rules on what constitutes a sport.

von Schwartz06 May 2019 4:38 p.m. PST

Does that mean I can go to the local sport clinic when I injure the hand I use to roll dice, or get a paper cut from the rule book?

You have obviously never been to a wargames show – apply that criteria and all wargamers would qualify !!!

I like Bobs position.

I work up a sweat just thinking about it.
