You were asked – TMP link Which rulesets do people keep playing, when they really should move on to something newer/better? 7% (tie) of the votes for "DBA" OR "Warhammer 40K" 7% for "DBM" 7% for "Empire" 6% for "Flames of War" |

It's a virtual 4-way tie. |

There is nothing newer/better than the new version of DBA, version 3. |

There are a lot of things I like about Flames. One of the specific things that I think Flames does better than Battlegroup is the anti-armor mechanic (numerical AT value versus target's ARM+d6) |

16% thought the poll ridiculous. A clear winner. |

Another one for Advcate. The most popular rule sets I see in the ancients room at Lancaster , can't speak for the others. But ADLG ( not even mentioned ) and Flames of War have the biggest amount of players by far. WAB has a good crowd, DBM there are only 6-8 regular players with a few extra one gamers- come in for a game or two rather than the while weekend. DBA hasn't had the numbers it used to in the days of 2.2+. And lastly triumph has a large following now, again not mentioned. So yes a silly poll with silly results, unless it's designed |

I don't pay attention to the Polls but this one is interesting. A few friends of mine have gotten sucked into Flames of War which I think is a stupid set of rules. I like WWII but until they move on I will be gaming other things. Why I think FoW is stupid is that it doesn't faithfully represent any level of WWII combat. It is just a mishmash of stuff thrown together to make a game. |

For all its shortcomings, at least FOW made the list. I mean, where's Bolt Action, Battlegroup or Chain of Command? |

Can't speak to B'group, but BA and CoC rulesets are usually sitting on the table when our group is playing them… |

Empire!? seriously? unless you play the French or the Brits you may just as well phone in your moves, you know you gonna lose. If you wanna do 1815 you're in luck, anything before 1811 you may as well forget it unless you're playing French. The Brits did well in peninsula against Napoleon's generals, but Napoleon himself was busy beating up the Austrians, Prussians, and Russians. |

You're getting your knickers in a knot over a game that came in with 7%??? That's close to the percentage that believes in a flat Earth. I guess just seeing the name "Empire" in print set you off. What that poll really boiled down to was guys with their noses in the air telling other people how not to play with toy soldiers. We've had enough of that. |

Why do people assume old is bad. I on a personal note do not like the modern trend for card driven or a handful of dice style rules. I prefer a game with a few factors thrown in, not a list a mile long but enough to make you think about which troops to use in a certain situation. My personal favourite rules I've used since I started way back in the late 70's are a little played but in my humble opinion solid set are Terry Gore's Ancient Warfare. At the end f the day its about having fun, play what you like. |

Lion---what do you mean by better? No context to yuour answer, so just a preference? Less referring to charts. In Battlegroup, you need to look up your vehicle stats to see gun type and armor, then you need to look up the Gun v Armor table to see what roll is needed to beat the armor. In Flames, you still need to look up your vehicle stats, but armor and gun are numerical, with a simple and constant rule for beating or bouncing: If defenders armor+d6 is greater than the attackers AT value, no effect. If defenders armor+d6 is equal to the attacker's AT value, attacker rolls Firepower to 'bail' (stun) the crew, if FP fails no effect. If defenders armor+d6 is less than the attackers AT value, attacker rolls firepower to kill the tank, if FP fails then tank is bailed/stunned. |

Lion. There are two solutions to charts and I used both in my different sets of rules. First make the numbers simple enough that after about 15 minutes of play you know your troops stats. Second use data cards. Both work well. My problem with FoW was not the charts it was the 100 exceptions to each rule that forced you to keep looking into the book to figure out. Again data cards go a long way to sort that out, which is probably why their newer versions went in that direction. Lee |

We've had enough of that. Not gonna take you to task, most of what you say is true, 'cept I wear boxers (y'know dancers underpants, they've got ballroom), and yes seeing Empire in print did hit a nerve, even at 7%. However, when 7% is also the highest percentage polled, there is cause for a little ire on my part. I played that stupid game for several years until my group got sick of it and moved on, and so have I. Just letting off a little steam is all. Yahoo! |
