For those of you who do not get much chance to visit a European castle or who want inspiration for a modelling project…

I was recently lucky enough to visit Peveril Castle in Derbyshire.

Each photo is a thumbnail which will open much bigger when double-clicked. Each photo is also captioned. Of particular interest to us is the roughly 1/200 scale model of the original castle which was created for the visually handicapped to touch.

It's very much a 'Game of Thrones' site and should inspire both straight medievalists and fantasy warmers.

Very nice. Thanks!

You are welcome!
From a model-making point-of-view I would commend these shots (below) as they are the roughly 1/200 scale model made for the visually impaired.

The model is shown from all sides and conveys a very 'Game of Thrones' atmosphere.

Nice shots. I missed that one on my Great Visit some years ago.

Your comment about 'disability friendly' reminded me of a comment by a bloke from English Heritage.

He was talking about how the organisation was trying to improve access to their sites, but at the same time preserving the history. He said that castles present a particular problem for disabled access because they were specifically designed to prevent fit young men entering!

@Cerdic
Precisely! :)

Given its position there is very little one can do to improve access at Peveril compared with other sites. A cable car or ski lift would destroy the site visually,

If readers would let me know (on here), I would be happy to post a few more castles or forts from my collection. I also hope to re-visit Warwick Castle this year and also to visit Lord William Hastings' Kirby Muxloe castle for the first time.

If all goes according to plan I will even take my 48-figures Hastings unit (in 15mm) with me and actually have them photographed inside his unfinished castle. Kirby Muxloe is almost unique in Britain as the builders walked off the job when they found out he had been executed (and they were not going to be paid) in the wake of Richard III's grab for power. As such the site shows the order in which the parts were built.

These appear to have been: the wet moat (lined with red brick), the gatehouse, one big tower and the wall foundations and other tower foundations. All this was in red brick. With the moat dug and the gatehouse up you have the minimums of a defence, even if the rest is a timber palisade. Raising the circuit walls and towers could then continue within a secure perimeter.

The Wiki page on Kirby Muxloe is very good:

Ah, I visited Peveril castle from school, back in the late 60's. Thanks for the reminder!
I still preferred the Blue John mines in Castleton, Derbyshire at the time!
I became a wargamer soon after so would have appreciated the castle more, methinks!
