I am looking into getting a few Ironclads, not too small not too big no more than 10 ships. What scale would you go with? |

I like 1/600. Small enough for small tables or big battles and big enough to retain plenty of detail. |

1/600, and all Thoroughbred. By far the best miniatures for the period in the best scale for small or modest battles of the period. I have a lot of 1/1200 ironclads, and I do not recommend them for anything except big battles with big vessels in large numbers needing plenty of sea room (Mobile Bay, Lissa, etc.). - Ix |

1/1200, by Thoroughbred, as a more cost effective alternative to the 1/00 scale range. Same great quality, a bit more true to scale on the table (depending on your rules), and cheaper! link |

As far as the ACW is concerned: having flirted with 1/1200 for ages (the old Lyzard's Grin models were among my first historicals), I am now soundly with 1/600. The scope of even the few largish battles, the short engagement ranges, the brown-water setting…smaller scales just seem unnecessary. And Thoroughbred's ships are beautiful. As for the price, how many do you really need? For top-quality models, it's just about the cheapest wargaming option around. I like Tumbling Dice's ships, and I could see maybe going with 1:1200 for European what-if's. |

I have 1/1200th – if I was only ever going to have ~10 ships I'd have gone for 1/600th |

1/600 all the way and Thoroughbred all the way. |

I'll game 1/600 bit prefer 1/1. |
