The trick will be to prevent the commanders from either micromanaging OR getting overwhelmed with all the information.

That is a well articulated observation. I think it is already happening with respect to modern warfare. I say this as someone who has seen the inner workings of an Air Operations Center.

While micromanaging is something you basically need to beat out of the officer in question (or better yet, find them unqualified to be an officer and get gently escorted out of service), the information overload is honestly something that can be addressed with a mix of training and data-display design.
