So I've been researching Breton military markings during the 100 Years War and the War of the Roses with pretty sparse results. In fact, other than Early HYW Knights shields I've only found one piece of later heraldry. That piece is an artists rendition of a footsoldier with a white tunic colored with a black cross on it (Much like the Tectonic colors). Is anyone else is aware of any other depictions I would appreciate the visual assist! |

The Breton re-enactors site huchehault have a brief article on crosses as a national emblem – link – which shows the original source for the reconstruction, and suggests that it's not clear when the Breton black cross was adopted but there seems to be no evidence earlier than the later C15th. Also link for a brief note on black-and-white livery. |

I think there are some in link though I can't find my copy to check. I do know that the illustrations are mostly of the Burgundians, but I think there are some others. |

Thank you Gentlemen! Very interesting stuff. Even with my poor French I was able to suss out some interesting information. Thank you. That should suffice for my unit which is a mercenary unit in the 1460s. |

Matt, thank you much for replying. I am looking to account for the mention of a Breton mercenary Troop under Sir James Butler at the battle of Mortimers Cross. Even though I could never know how the actual troops looked I would be plenty satisfied if I could find something to attire them in that was true to their country in that time frame. Cheers. |

I found my Montlhery book*. Only a couple of bits of Breton heraldry and an archer in the ducal colours, so not much use. It has a ducal standard of white over black, with a white lion, which looks interesting. A change from the usual semee of ermine. The book is good for the Burgundians before Charles' reorganisation though. *Usual method – give up looking for it and look for something else, then you'll find it.
