My terrain collection has always lacked a proper town gate and walls that I could use for wargaming a city/siege scenario or for a skirmish or RPG game.
Part of the reason I chose Thomarillion's town gate and walls was economic. I very much wanted to invest in Tabletop World's town gate and wall sections. But when I did the math I realized that their gate and four wall sections would cost a whopping $450.00 USD! I just couldn't justify spending that much, as much as I love Tabletop World's stuff and own a few pieces.
By comparison I got Thomarillion's gate and four wall sections for a total of about $180.00 USD which including shipping.
I am VERY impressed by Noch's hard foam. The detail was much crisper than I thought it would be. And the scale is fantastic! It's true 28mm and the gate really towers over 28mm miniatures. It also came pre-sprayed in gray so I all I have to do is drybrush all the stone areas and do weathering, and then just paint all the wooden parts separately.
The only thing this gate lacks is the functionality of the gate doors, which are a permanent part of the gate, nothing can open or close, whereas with Tabletop World's you can have the gate open if you want it to be.
But other than that this is a GREAT set of terrain, and the hard foam allows you to customize the walls if you want to accommodate round or square tower walls. All you need to do is wrap sand paper around a cylindrical object and sand the shape out of the wall ends so that round towers can fit into them.
The hard foam looks like it will take primer and paint really well and you can add any extra details you want with pva glue.
