That's what I do for basing, too. All my figs are individually based on thin steel. Use 60 mil mag sheets from magnet valley (cunningham72 on hatebay). About $ 3.50 a 10X8 sheet.
It works to hold the figs in the box and cut for the base size of whatever the game requires.

Pardon me, but isn't that a little "bass ackwards"? Shouldn't you mount the figures on magnet bases and use thin sheets of metal in the bottom of your storage box? A lot cheaper and the magnets are a lot easier to cut than sheet metal. The added plus, when you want to combine units for ease of movement, just cut a sheet metal piece to fit under both units and you can move them as one base! Voila!!
