Used a MO-4 flotilla to test out a screening scenario for my upcoming Flotilla Forward. Found here:

Enjoy

Joe, that is excellent! I was drawn into the mission right away by your characters and the AAR's personal, narrative style.

Your boats look great too!

So Flotilla Forward is a scenario book you've been working on?

Tell us more, and also, what was it you were working on for Wargames Illustrated? (you've been busy!)

Very good!

Thanks to you both.
Fly, your boats look so much better! Don't get me started on Flotilla Forward. It is similar to Platoon Forward [land] and Squadron Forward [air] in that they are a set of campaign rules that focus on the characters and their interactions. Sort of a very lite RPG to provide background to your battles with several die rolls. Part 2 are the scenarios. A flotilla commander doesn't get to pick his mission or get points to pick his forces. He gets handed a job and has to make do with the forces available. If he has a good relationship with his boss he might get additional stuff if he is lucky. ( Or he might pull a boat from you because he has other priorities like just happened ) Of course the best way to have a good relationship is to win. The third part are the fun randomish bits for the scenarios. Here there is visibility, sea state, squalls ( all broken down by theater of course) as well as random in game events.
It is all done except for the scenarios. Another great thing is these are not tied to any tactical rule set. They are generic enough to be able to use with any ship to ship coastal set.
You are aware of Crueler Seas that addresses the guns and torpedos for Cruel Seas. WI informed me today that they will be publishing this.
I am also working on another mod for Cruel Seas tentatively called, Tumultuous Seas. This will be aimed more for grognards. This will fix the ship ratings add some differentiation to several guns ( such as the russian 45mm realy wasn't that good) add formations and better aircraft rules. As this one will really be for a niche audience I will probably release it as a word document.
Lastly I will probably pen an article on the coastal war on the Black Sea for WI as some point and might include how to convert some of Warlords models. The conversions will also be on my blog. ( that magnet idea for the guns works great!)
I am sure you are sorry you asked!

LOL – not sorry at all!…..scenario generation/generators [w/context] are some of the most-needed game utilities, and which are lacking in many rule sets.

We'll be looking forward to Crueler Seas and Flotilla Forward when you have them ready to launch (give us a shout-out when WI is ready to release Crueler – I'll want that month).

Never sorry to hear you talk about game stuff. Definitely put out the word when it is ready

Thank you both for saying that. I am always hesitant to say too much about my stuff for fear that people think I am pushing it. I am not; read the stories and enjoy them. That is why they are there. I don't make anything that I don't play so I tend to be excited about it. ( actually I end up wanting it so I make it; if it is really good then I write it up.) 50% of anything I make goes to the local food bank and everything has a 100% money back guarantee. I just like experiencing and telling good stories. I can't paint like you Fly so I do what I can!
Thanks again to you all.

Joe
