Very cool! I have been to Antietam Battlefield MANY times because my ancestor George Cooley, 7th Wisconsin Volunteers was killed at South Mountain and is buried in the cemetery in Sharpsburg. |

I fondly remember hours spent there talking to a park guide or ranger, who was formerly with the USMC artillery. We talked about "what they saw" about reverse slopes, how I discovered that batteries could be surprised by infantry coming from the front… about angles of fire and more. I became less critical of poor Sumner who followed orders with poor intel, who could not see anything where he was. Maybe I am now mixed up a bit as I left ACW drift far, and all this was in 1997. But Both Gettysburg and Antietam are an absolute must for curious students of battles. |

John, I have been there only once, it was a couple of summers ago. But I have gamed it. Almost the entire battlefield in 15mm regimental. Your book was extremely helpful in writing the scenario. I took it with me to the battlefield. My wife was surprised I knew my way around it, without ever being there before. I am in the middle of your South Mountain book as we are playing out the campaign. We have done Crampton's and Fox's Gaps. Getting ready for Turners' Gap. |

Your book "Antietam the Soldier's Battle" is far and away my favorite on the battle. |

Always heartening to hear of people doing the thing they really enjoy. A rare happening. Big yellow taxi? |

It is a great job. Safer than teaching high school. Always an adventure, gnats included. |

Hi John Not wishing to make your head swell too much, but I've found both your books, The Battle for South Mountain and The Soldiers Battle, to be most informative and enjoyable works on the Maryland Campaign I've read. Thank you very much for them. Nick |

I travelled from the UK to visit Antietam last July. I didn't go with a guide, but read up about it before hand. I found it so inspirational, I've done little but ACW painting and gaming since. Here a little piece I wrote on my new found project: link I'd like to visit again and it'd be an honour to be shown around by yourself John. (Though it's unlikely to be in the near future). |
