yes, useful thanks. I am terrible at painting horses, but this gives me some useful guidelines.

Very much so.

Most of us will just stick to bays, chestnuts, greys and blacks (as indeed did most European cavalry of that era) with the occasional white sock and face markings on all. I have saved several such charts, but find it more useful to seek out photos of individual breeds, as these charts generally are not of a resolution to allow enlargement.

What would be so useful would be a database of horse breeds used by different countries/units and colours favoured. I fully realise that, by 1813 the idea that the first squadron was all one colour and the second another is nonsense.

But a good find and I have saved it….. many thanks (grin)

What would be even more helpful is a chart showing that bay is replicated by Vallejo model color xxx or 20% Humbol xx + 80% Humbol xx for example.

I found that bay is well represented by "Coat d'Arms" bay, and chestnut by "Coat d'Arms" chestnut, and so on. I believe they are still available !

I think a lot of more colourful horses are "modern" breeds so that keeping to bays, chestnuts and duns is reasonable until, say 1800's America. Having said that, I have just received some second-hand Egyptian chariots and some of the horses have been painted white with small black spots, which seemed realistic to me….

Hell, I just look out my back door and there are just about all the colors mentioned as well as various markings.

You mean all horses aren't chestnut brown with black mane, eyes, and hooves?

von Schwartz24 Apr 2019 6:27 p.m. PST

I think eto needs to expand his color palette.
