I am looking for ideas for creating a 28mm, commonwealth native platoon, for Africa 1940-41. Any ideas on 28mm figures equipment and or separate heads would be greatly Appreciated. I have already done Sikhs, Gurkhas and Eritrean Askari for the Italian side. |

Maybe Somaliland Camel Corps? I recall ages ago that Ravensthorpe did them in 20mm. The look is actually pretty similar to Sudanese from 1898. |

If you are into plastics, Warlord makes a set of Waffen-SS that comes with optional fez heads for building them as Handschar division: link Since most customers probably choose to build theirs with the regular heads, it should not be too difficult to obtain the fez heads on the second hand market. |

What organization are you planning on portraying? Most of the East and West African troops wore KD and slouch hats. The Sudan Frontier Force wore turbans and keffiyeh. |

I was interested in portraying a commonwealth unit along the lines of the kings African rifles. 28mm . The challenge is finding variety to make an interesting platoon. I haven't as of yet found troops in bush hats. That I could paint as African. My Australians platoon have bush hats. This unit is representative. |

You've got Sikhs, but there were plenty of Indian Army soldiers in North Africa that weren't Sikhs. Generally they wore standard British tin hats, but you could distinguish them with darker complexion skin and magnificent mustaches! And you could (if you want to push the limits on historical accuracy) show some in different styles of turban
Above image is clearly in the safety of a rear area! Woodbine also has a variety of Indian turbans to select from: link |

Thankyou for your help, I have some ideas now. I will continue research. One of the reasons for my foray into the western desert. Is an excuse to create some diverse or unique units.(if only to me) I think historically there were alot of people who made sacrifice and contribution and didn't receive much recognition. I was looking for a way to break from the mold of Monty and Rommel and here in the States, We charged in and won the war. (this is tongue and cheek) Not really looking to make a political statement just find a way to add some slightly different perspective to my games.Hey and if a game brings about some enlightened conversation or introduces history to some one new that's a good thing? isn't it? |

Glad to help! If you want to add even more diversity to your armies, look at the Free French. L'Armée d'Afrique was very diverse, including Foreign Legion, Tirailleurs Senegalese (with or without fez!), Zouaves, Goumiers (very distinctive appearance) and more. Goumier
Tiralleur Senegalese
Legion
