On a scale of 0 (play the same thing over and over) to 10 (never play the same thing twice), how much variety is there in your wargaming?

We play the same thing over and over until it actually becomes the same thing instead of a different game with the same scenario.

I guess … 9?

7 or 8. We used to play a set of games each quarter that used the same rules, but we no longer do that now.

Depends on you mean by variety. But by my definition, I would say 8 or 9.

Narratio06 Apr 2019 7:07 p.m. PST

I'd give it a 4 or 5

About a 7

I play two rule sets, frequently. The scenarios, however, are varied, every time. The rules remain the same, which allows us to focus our attention on the scenario, the tactics, and the win. The rules become 2nd nature, and they then fade into the background, mostly.

I would say that as far as changing rules sets I play, I would need to rate myself a 1-2. For scenario variety, I would rate myself as a 9. My scenarios vary dramatically, even within the same genre, and rule set. I am open to switching sides, and playing the same scenario over again, to see it from a different perspective, but the majority of my players won't do that. By switching sides, I've gained a new view on tactics, which I have found to be invaluable: the same scenario, same forces, but seeing it from the other side. That truly helps me to see tactics I never thought of before.

I want the rules to facilitate the scenario -- they are a tool, like a shovel, for digging fox holes. I view them as utilitarian. The pleasure, for me, comes out of the scenario, not the mechanics of how I resolve the scenario. YMMV, and that is to be expected. Cheers!

…but melange is the Spice of the Universe!

(Guess who's re-reading Dune?)

Okay, serious response (well, as serious as any of my gaming ever is):
Depends on the rule system.
I will play lots of different games. Some always pretty much are the same scenario. Some involve differing scenarios. I like to play the same ones, and I also like to shake things up.
So I guess I'm a 5.
