An interesting read. I don't know enough about the topic, but am always glad to learn more, because lets face it, we all love swords :)

One oddity about the katana is that it remained in continuous use as a combat blade from somewhere around 1000AD (or earlier!) clear up until 1650. From then until 1870, it was the weapon of the ruling class, then it returned to being a combat blade of the officer class in the military.

By the time westerners bumped into katanas, in the very late 1400s or early 1500s, the westerners were using rapiers. Not much contest between the two, a rapier has about a 4ft reach advantage over a katana, maybe more. This means that our insulted Samurai is almost guaranteed to get keyholed by that rapier before the samurai gets close enough to take the offending European's head. To win, the samurai would have to know that the European blade needs to be treated much more like a spear than a sword.
