"The Cossacks have arrived" Topic

I just got the last Russian troops I will need to finish my entire 1st Western Army of the Borodino OOB, 55 Cossacks to make up 6 regiments and the Sumsk Hussar regiment.
This completes having the entire army at 1=60, only 3 substitutions with 1 dragoon and 2 Cossack regiments out of 14 regiments.
Wondered if this day would get here ever, now enough painting for the year.

Don't do like me. No trumpets with cossacks. Niet. So fr too lzynto take them out.

Were not trumpets presented to some Cossacks as awards of merit? One or two would not be amiss.

AB figures, no trumpets. I have removed items from figures before.
My 2 Tartar Cossack regiments are the ones getting substitution with the Tartar Uhlans which I made up long ago and got pushed out of the OOB.

I give all my units flags and trumpets. I like them and its my army.

You have a lot of leeway with the Cossacks

They can have pretty much anything they can steal

Finished up a few infantry odd figures that went to battalions that needed them first. But now to finish my Borodino project I have came to finding I have 80 cavalry figures to get to the end, 12 Astrakan Cuirassiers ( 1981 vintage Heritage figures) and new 13 Sumy Hussars, and 55 Cossacks, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.
The Black Sea Guard squadron is up first, 2 figures.

I have an entire regiment of cossacks armed with Zulu thrusting spears and encouraged by an 8 figure accordion music section. Check back and I'll post pictures tomorrow.

Using Sho Boki's examples finished the first squadron of my new Cossack horde. Going to work on my Heritage Astrakan Cuirassiers as they were on the painting desk before the Cossacks arrived.

Finished Astrakan Cuirassiers, so next up is 8 figures of Ilovaisy V's Don Cossack regiment.

It's not just about possessing a stolen trumpet – it's whether or not the complex system of calls and commands are understood by both the trumpeter and the troopers and that, further, it's a regular component in an integrated pattern of control.

That said, if I have Cossack trumpeters – they get used. It's just the Foundry one.

I didn't remember but my Bug Cossacks have a trumpeter.
Finished Ilovaiski V regiment and onto the Teptyarsk regiment.
I was glad I bought a large group of Cossack figures all at once so I could mix and match as I wanted, but the Teptyarsk regiment got the short end and only has 7 figures.
58 figures to go.

I forgot to add that it seems my Cossacks are quite poor compaied to some, so I at least tried to paint one with a colorful Oriental carpent on the back of his horse, I think he looted it somewhere and uses it as his sleeping blanket.

Finished the Teptyaskis so onto the next, the Ataman regiment. The biggest as it was the only one to receive replacements constantly and wasn't sent back as a regiment.
I haved 14 in this unit. 38 Cossacks, 51 figures total to go.

Ataman regiment is done, 1/2 in fur hats the other 1/2 in the visor felt hats. Reading about Cossacks I am assuming their horses were Vyatka breed and since they had a lot of dun colors mostly did them as that. I added bags to the fur hats as they ( AB) didn't have them.
Onto Zhirov regiment of 8 figures all in visor hats.
One interesting thing Zhirov is the name on the Borodino OOB but that was a short lived commander, it becomes Melnikov 4th.
That leave 24 Cossacks and 13 Hussars to reach the goal.
Slowly but surely getting there.

I've always wondered about the wisdom of representing all the cossacks in an OB. Most of them did not see the battlefield, after all. So what's the point of building ALL the units. I can see having some units, but not all?

It was only the goal of having the entire 1st Western Army that drove me to get 12 out of 14, ( 2 are substituted)
Or Got to paint something, why not?

Well in for a penny, in for a pound so no point in stopping now.
Zhirov regiment is done,a little out of uniform but not much and still lots of dun colored horses.
Denisov VII is next, also of 8 figures.
16 Cossacks and 13 Hussars to go.

Took 3 weeks but finally finished Denison VII regiment, one to go Kharitonov VII's then last but not least Sumsk Hussars. I originally thought it would take all summer to finish all these so was up to lately doing a good pace.
Thinking of making these guys a ragged bunch in uniform.

Kharitonov VII is done and the Cossack horde is complete.
12 regiments of Cossacks, 2 stand in.
1 last hussar regiment to go to finish this army.
