Well, there's a surprise.

There was an old Larry Leadhead cartoon where the punchline referred to "the right shade of black."

The funny thing is, I regularly use 3 different shades of black when painting. Pure black I use for blackened leather, almost-pure black (about 98%, I think) for black material (clothing, felt shakes, etc.), and a Testor's color called "Scale Black" (maybe 95%?) for highlights and black hair. When combined with a lot of other contrasting colors (I paint Napoleonics), the human mind will see these all as black, but will still be able to distiguish where one ends and the other begins.

This is the only way I've ever found to make Brunswickers look good.

Folk Art makes a color called "Liquorice" which is like a matte black. I prefer it to regular black.

I have a lot more black variants than brass.

Well I have one brass one gold and three different shades of black, not counting gloss black.

I routinely add a drop of blue, brick red or yellow to my black depending on the tone I want, be it warm or cool. White as necessary. A painter need not paint by numbers but by eye so the rule applies to all colors: break, tint or shade them as necessary
