The question is in the title, really. I'm getting steam up for a Spanish Conquistador versus Maya project and I need inspiration. I read Prescott several years ago (probably due for a re-read), and am reading the letters of Cortes now (they are great, by the way!), while Diaz is on the to-do list. I likewise own several pertinent Ospreys. What I'm especially looking for are good, modern works for the general reader – think Christopher Hibbert and Alan Moorehead sort of works. I'd especially like things on the Spanish campaigns against the Maya and Inca. The Aztec stuff is easy. Good fictional works would be great as well. What would be perfect would be something from the Spanish point of view that would immerse one in the period, possibly with a dash of Indiana Jones thrown in for good measure, but alas, I'm not sure such a work exists. Finally, any good films to watch? I've seen and loved The Mission, Aguirre (what a film!) and might give Captain From Castille a try (though it looks a little dated); I hesitate on Apocolypto because of the gore. Any other suggestions? Thank you for any help! |

Prescott's "History of the Conquest of Mexico" is the classic text. |

Thank you all. I may have to watch Apocolypto – I love (is that the word?) The Passion, so maybe my qualms are baseless. |

Those are some excellent, gentlemen, thank you. Duke, both books look just the thing. |

The way in which they captured Atahualpa and the impact of horses and the subsequent Inca conquest is too incredible to believe. These guys had some monster c*j*nes. |
