Hello everyone , As you know, the Turcomans light cavalry of the Muslim armies who fought the Crusaders in the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries sometimes possessed javelins in addition to their bows. They seem to be taking their javelins in quivers to keep their hands free for archery. Well my question is: does anyone know how these javelin quivers were worn? Links for illustrations are welcome, thank you. |

You might want to look in one of the WRG "Armies of…" series. Probably the crusades one. I seem to remember seeing a picture of a combined bow case with a "tube" attached to the straight edge, holding javelins. It was a while ago though. Sorry I can't be more helpful. |

The only Turkoman illustrated in the book of the WRG, "Armies and Enemies of the Crusades 1096 – 1291" by Ian Heath is page 89 and has nothing attached to the straight edge? He has a bow and a quiver with arrows and javelins in his hand … |

Hello Druzhina Thank you,I have George Gush's book, but the Russians are not turcomans. We must be careful because each people has its way of doing things. |

Very simple Druzhina, javelins having a range shorter than the bows, I suppose that the turcomans light cavalry , like all Muslim mounted archers shot from very far, doubt their inneficiency after Ian Heath… So it's that they used their bows before their javelins, and while they used their bows, where were the javelins? Obligatorily in a quiver that was reserved for them … I had the same kind of questions with the comanches, how to shoot with the bow when you take a spear of 4 m long? The comanches all like turcomans did not have 3 arms … But now I know that the Comanches managed to pinch and hold their long spears of 4 m of long with their left leg and foot which left their hands free for archery.
