"Trenches were long, narrow ditches dug into the ground where soldiers lived.

They were very muddy, uncomfortable and the toilets overflowed. These conditions caused some soldiers to develop medical problems such as trench foot.

There were many lines of German trenches on one side and many lines of Allied trenches on the other…."

Rather 'bite size…'

Thought there was a better piece posted here on TMP a while back.

Went into a fair bit of detail including the unit rotation – as I recall the normal rotation was a only a week actually in the front line during a month.

A bit different when an offensive was being planned, but not nearly the never ending meat grinder of popular perception.
