… the Works at Paramount. "Once upon a time in the land of Hollywood (back in the '50s and '60s), Westerns were the superhero movies of their day. They featured larger-than-life heroes overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds and fighting evil villains who wreaked havoc on the innocent townsfolk. The filmgoing public ravenously consumed these movies, kids cosplayed as their favorite Western heroes, and movie studios relied on them as consistent money makers. A select few of these even became classics by breaking the clichéd rules of the genre and confronting viewers with uncomfortable moral quandaries. One of these classics is John Ford‘s 1962 film The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, starring Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne and a young Lee Marvin. The film finds Stewart playing wide-eyed lawyer Ranse Stoddard, who rises to prominence as a U.S. Senator after he finds his cojones, and with some mysterious help from Wayne's veteran gunslinger Tom Doniphon, rids the town of Marvin's Liberty Valance. When a reporter finds out the truth about what happened to Valance, he must decide whether to print the truth or let the legend live on. Stewart and Wayne are great in the movie, but it's Marvin who steals this one with his electric, evil charm. It's considered one of the greatest Westerns ever made and now it's getting a remake… of sorts…." Main page link Amicalement Armand

No matter what time period it is set in, nothing will ever top the original!! |

I agree. No confidence in Hollywood remakes after the remake of the Magnificent Seven. (yes I know it was a westernized Seven Samuri). Paul |

Unfortunately, this has no resemblance to the original based upon what the article relates. By making the main character a cop, you take away the dynamic that Jimmy Stewart presented in the original. Same goes for the partner who will also be a cop (the John Wayne role}. Think I could write a better plot while freely imbibing my favorite acholic beverage as I type this response. |

I think it was Roger Ebert who suggested that you should go on remaking movies only until you get one right. (The Bogart Maltese Falcon was the third, by the way--and there's a reason you don't remember the other two.) If they have to remake a John Wayne movie, may I recommend The Conqueror? Or possibly Jet Pilot? |

It doesn't sound like the remake will have much in common with the original. The original is one of my favourite westerns, even if Jimmy Stewart was way too old for his role. |

Wow, another 'remake'. Might be cheaper for them to CGI current actors over the ones in the original. (That's one they haven't tried yet… ;-) |

Actually, Zephyr, I keep thinking of using CGI to put classic actors in new roles. Apart from inflated salaries, think what the studios would save by having actors who would always be there when needed, wouldn't argue about the script, and could be counted on not to have a fresh scandal prior to the release date. |

Are they kidding look at the famous 'steak scene' and count the classic actors and actresses from many other westerns- how do they hope to top that? YouTube link |

No, I didn't go on to read the full article, but I already knew by the thread title I was going to learn of another great film exploited and used like so much toilet paper. Besides the irreplaceable talents of EVERYONE on camera, the biggest missing ingredient will always be its Director, John Ford. Certainly, it will fail--I frankly want it to--but the parasites associated with it will still get paid, see their faces on "Entertainment Tonight," and get their 15 minutes of (undeserved) fame. Then, when some schmucks see their Frankenstein's monster of a product, they'll think the "old" one must not be worth seeing. "I mean, it's in BLACK AND WHITE! How can it POSSIBLY good!?" Hell is not hot enough for those grave robbers who call themselves producers and film-makers today. TVAG |

I'm just glad it isn't a Western, but a modern cops 'n crack film that I can simply ignore. Any similarity to the original will be purely coincidental. |

I made the mistake of watching Four Brothers, and then came to realize part way into the film it was The Sons of Katie Elder remade as a modern movie. And it stank. A movie that is made with a great script, but lousy acting, or directing, or poor special effects, by all means, give it a second shot later and remake it. A movie that hit a grand slam home run (like Liberty Valance) is perfect. You cannot improve on perfection. Why waste time and money on a second-rate attempt? |

Destined for the giant bins at Wall Mart that I never even pause in curiosity at. Just like the movie "the kid" (Billy the kid) which had no release here in the Pittsburgh area. Regards Russ Dunaway |

I blushingly admit to never having seen this film, and I love Westerns! Must get on this… |
