"Wade Hampton III was born into a life of heritage and privilege. His grandfather fought in the Revolutionary War, was a member of the House of Representatives, and became a general in the War of 1812. His father also served as an officer in the War of 1812, and was an aide to future President Andrew Jackson during the Battle of New Orleans. Both sides of his family were immensely wealthy, and his family owned thousands of slaves to work their many plantations. Wade seemed destined for an easy life. Overlooked? Hardly. His performance at First Manassas was noted at the time. He has an infantry brigade commander by early 1862. If his career stalled at that point it was because he was wounded and then shifted to the cavalry. When the ANV cavalry was finally divided into divisions Hampton got one. For a time he commanded the ANV cavalry and he ended the war a Lt. Gen. Hardly the resume for an overlooked general. |
