People talk about the golden age of this hobby and how many figures and periods there are. One thing overlooked is paint. Back when I had hair there were very few choices available in paint. Most were enamels, some oils and very few quality acrylics. Now there is a plethora of specialized acrylics and the ever present craft paints available for the painter to chose from. The craft paints are usually the equal if not better than the good old days paint selection. This recognition doesn't seem to be appreciated as much as the figure selection but is equally important to presentation of our miniature legions. So, yes, there is also a golden age of paint and I for one appreciate it. |

It's not just the paint itself, it's also the availability of painting tutorials and techniques. When I started trying to paint 25 years ago I had next to no way of improving. When I started again a couple years ago the knowledge at my fingertips was astounding. You'd have to try not improving these days… |

Switching from enable to Vallejo enabled me to make a significant improvement very rapidly. I'm so much more comfortable with acrylics than enamel. |

Fortunately when I started painting there were many in my wargame group who were eager to impart their specific pearls of wisdom to this raw little neophyte. I still use most of their techniques. One major exception, one guy said that I should paint the primer and then bake it on, 250F for 20 minutes. Worked fine for about 3-4 batches. The fifth, and as it turned out, the last batch however, I followed my usual procedure. When the timer for 20 minutes dinged in the kitchen I went there to remove my "heat cured" micro-armor tanks and found several neat little puddles of melted metal on the cookie sheet. |

Nothing wrong with Humbrol or pre-1970 Imrie-Risley enamels: both were capable of producing fine results. But I do prefer acrylics now for ease of use and the lack of stinky solvents. |

I really love how Humbrol enamels paint. However, I have no desire to suffer brain damage from sucking in too many fumes. That being said, the modern explosion of good acrylic paints is a boon to the hobby. |

More access to better paints More access to better brushes More access to tutorials and how-to videos I guess I could add primers and washes to the list I think you all summed it up nicely. |
