"Visiting the USS Gerald R. Ford two years ago, U.S. President Donald Trump extolled the importance of an enlarged naval force featuring a dozen aircraft carriers—including the Ford, the most expensive ship ever built. cost. $13 USD billion per carrier, now. Operations cost of $2.5 USD million a day. And that is before you buy planes and support ships. |

The Ticos are old. The newest Tico was commissioned in 1994, which makes USS Port Royal 25 years old. This is broadly speaking their design life. The problem with retiring the Ticos is that the Burkes don't have the space for the Escort Group Commander (and staff). The Flight III Burkes will have this extra command space, probably by being near-clones of the Japanese Kongo-class. The Kongos are slightly-enlarged (and very re-arranged internally) Burkes, specifically to include squadron-command space. |
