He has one of my favorite quotes from the British side about the war;

"As we go forward into the country the rebels fly before us, and when we come back they always follow …. we seem to be playing at bo-peep"

23d- where does that quotation come? Has Bamford's journal been anthologised already?

By the way, I think the blurb might have put 42nd Regiment instead of 40th.

15. Su. very hot day. Landed on N York Isl'd without oppo-
sition, lay on onr Arms this night the Rebels went off in great
hurry from the Town towards Kings Bridge.

16. M. last nt very cold, cool Mg no tents a sharp skirmish between some of our Advanc'd Troops & the Rebels in ye woods, we had many (91) wounded very few kill'd.(10) encamped near on ye Common

17 Tu. Very wet mg. p. m. Cleared. No tents, built wigwams
We cannot learn the loss of the Enemy, the Deserters tell us
Genl Thomas is killed wt many men.
18. W. hot sun. got our Tents.

Moved our Encampmt about 1/2 mile to the Front very rough
Ground, much Labour to clear it Deserters & Pris'rs come in
daily
