Do you dig out your copies of wargaming magazines from years past and read them again?

Whirlwind20 Mar 2019 1:03 p.m. PST

Yes, usually to mine for useful scenarios, sometimes to use an old set of rules or read an old opinion piece.

yes

I'll pull out a few issues of Dragon that I kept for specific articles, adventures, or included games. Occasionally I wind up re-reading other articles in them.
A little bit I wish I had kept my entire run, but I gave it to a younger cousin years ago. Still, I'm glad he got to enjoy them too.

Son of MOOG20 Mar 2019 1:13 p.m. PST

Yes, quite frequently.

OldGrenadier at work20 Mar 2019 1:15 p.m. PST

Yes, all the time.

nevinsrip20 Mar 2019 1:16 p.m. PST

Yes. Especially when I am laid up with an illness or injury. Perfect way to pass the time.

Alcibiades20 Mar 2019 1:23 p.m. PST

When I am looking for inspiration or a touch of nostalgia I often dig out my old collection of Don Featherstone's Wargamer's Newsletter. There wasn't much locally in the way of wargaming when I was a boy growing up on the Canadian prairies so Don's monthly mag was my life line to the hobby. The third week of every month I would race home from school for lunch so I could check the mail.

Corporal Fagen20 Mar 2019 1:30 p.m. PST

Once in a great while

377CSG Supporting Member of TMP20 Mar 2019 1:38 p.m. PST

Yes -especially articles on uniforms.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP20 Mar 2019 1:55 p.m. PST

Certainly. Sometimes I'll bring them in from the garage 100 or so at a time. I'm looking for rules or scenarios, mostly, when it's not just random enjoyment. It's another problem with the postponed flea markets, because for choice the first thing I do at a convention is pick up some old wargaming magazines to read that afternoon and evening.

khanscom20 Mar 2019 2:04 p.m. PST

Yes, regularly.

nickinsomerset20 Mar 2019 2:05 p.m. PST

Yes, good for reading on the throne room,

Tally Ho!

rustymusket20 Mar 2019 2:16 p.m. PST

I quit doing that long ago.

Winston Smith20 Mar 2019 2:25 p.m. PST

I used to have a complete run of the Courier back in the day.
When I realized that I hadn't glanced at even one of them in 5 years…..

Texas Jack20 Mar 2019 2:30 p.m. PST

Not me, I canīt even keep up with my current reading.

Aethelflaeda was framed20 Mar 2019 2:44 p.m. PST

Gave away all my old dragons…issue 12-200 or so, at a con. I still have my old couriers and drag them out every so often. Lots of S&T, I occassionally pull out thinking i might give the game a shot.

Skeets Supporting Member of TMP20 Mar 2019 2:47 p.m. PST

Yes I do and just recently after going to a lecture on the Fenian Raid into Canada by the book's author. I vaguely remembered an article in WI. The next day I went through my backlog of issue and located an article on the history of the raid and another article with rules to game it!

Patrick R20 Mar 2019 3:14 p.m. PST

Yep

Personal logo Herkybird Supporting Member of TMP20 Mar 2019 3:18 p.m. PST

Very rarely, the Internet has replaced them as a source for me!

Wargamer Blue20 Mar 2019 3:26 p.m. PST

Not really. Sometimes I have a look for a painting guide.

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP20 Mar 2019 3:28 p.m. PST

Yes, Very frequently. Especially for opinions when I start a new period. MWAN, Courier, Tradition, Military Modelling, Wargames, WSS, Historical Miniature Mag, Panzerfaust, SYW Journals (old printed versions), Battlefield, just to name a few. Investments!

FusilierDan Supporting Member of TMP20 Mar 2019 4:34 p.m. PST

I sold most of mine off. Saved a few for scenarios but rarely go back even to them.

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP20 Mar 2019 4:45 p.m. PST

I used to do it a lot, but haven't had time during the last couple of years. I still have them, so I'm sure I will again.

Bashytubits20 Mar 2019 9:27 p.m. PST

Yes I do. Some great stuff and references in there.

Grimmnar20 Mar 2019 9:29 p.m. PST

I personally wish my collection was in PDF for easier storage. LOL
MY 3 sets of White Dwarf alone would help so much.
And the WI i am thinking of starting, but i hate the way they do the electronic version of their mag.

Grimm

Forager20 Mar 2019 10:53 p.m. PST

Strangely enough, just one specific magazine. The August 1977 issue of Wargamer's Digest. It's the only issue of WD I ever purchased. Not really sure why, because I've enjoyed this one quite a bit. Particularly liked the "Battle Stations" section, where a tactical situation on the tabletop is described and a tantalizingly vague photograph of the tabletop deployment is included as well. The reader is invited to "solve" the tactical puzzle and a solution is provided later in the magazine. Of course, there are several interesting articles, also. Heck, even the old ads are fun to look at!

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP21 Mar 2019 1:48 a.m. PST

Occasionally. Currently going through old mags to see what can be gotten rid of.

surdu200521 Mar 2019 2:11 a.m. PST

I have a complete set of Miniature Wargames from issue number 1 to the present. I do not read them, and I would give them a good home, but I want to do so as a complete set, not in dribs and drabs. If anyone is interested, let me know.

Green Tiger21 Mar 2019 2:16 a.m. PST

I cut all mine up – wish I hadn't as I am really not impressed by recent years output…

dampfpanzerwagon Fezian21 Mar 2019 2:49 a.m. PST

Yes often.

redbanner414521 Mar 2019 4:15 a.m. PST

Sold off all the Couriers, MWANs, etc. years ago as I ran out of space but I still pull out my Charge mags for scenarios frequently.

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP21 Mar 2019 6:04 a.m. PST

Yes. Not as often as I would like, sadly.

BTW, I would count rereading electronic and online articles as part of rereading your old wargaming magazines. UseNet in the 80's, baby!

Old Wolfman21 Mar 2019 6:53 a.m. PST

Sure do.

martin goddard Sponsoring Member of TMP21 Mar 2019 7:11 a.m. PST

Nope.
Because I have no house room for them.
Having said that, I have kept about 5 or so "special" magazines that mean something to me.
If I were to keep anything, it would be WSS as I like the "theme" method.

79thPA Supporting Member of TMP21 Mar 2019 7:42 a.m. PST

I still have all of my MWANs, but I got rid of just about everything else.
