Which defunct wargame show or convention do you most miss?

stephen m19 Mar 2019 12:16 p.m. PST

All from the '70s and '80s in Universities where you paid $15 USD for a room for the night and every square inch of the con was full.

Northern Militaire in Manchester!

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP19 Mar 2019 12:37 p.m. PST

The Midwest Napoleonic Wargaming Confederation Fall Formal Game. Two days and about 4,000 30mm castings on two boards.

Tommy2019 Mar 2019 12:48 p.m. PST

GenCon in Milwaukee. It was big enough to have everything, but not so crowded that you (literally) couldn't get in like today.

22ndFoot19 Mar 2019 12:53 p.m. PST

Northern Militaire was a cracking show when I was fourteen but I doubt it would hold my attention much these days. Time moves on.

PzGeneral19 Mar 2019 12:59 p.m. PST

ORIGINS.

Yes, it's still being held, but miniature's gaming has become pretty much extinct…..

David Manley19 Mar 2019 1:03 p.m. PST

Ragnarok, the old SFSFW annual show

Wackmole919 Mar 2019 1:12 p.m. PST

Genghis con in Denver.Co. It's now a for profit operations and Historical Miniature wargaming just doesn't fit into their needs.

21eRegt19 Mar 2019 1:17 p.m. PST

TwinCon in St. Paul. Gone these many years, back when I ran games in every con.

CAPCON, which used to be held every spring at OSU's Ohio Union.

rmaker19 Mar 2019 2:06 p.m. PST

At least for now, Colonial Barracks/BromCon. Lori promises it will be back next year. I certainly hope so.

historygamer19 Mar 2019 2:32 p.m. PST

Fall In held at Gettysburg.

Celesticon in the San Francisco Bay Area, which ran from about 2008 to 2015.

irishserb19 Mar 2019 3:13 p.m. PST

Its really that whole era of conventions from the 1980s. NeoCon at Akron U.
Capcon at OSU,
Fal-Con at Bowling Green State U.
Colonial City Gamefest in Mount Vernon Ohio

Can't remember the names of the ones in Dayton, Mansfield, and various other places in Ohio and eastern PA that we went to.

Patrick R19 Mar 2019 3:52 p.m. PST

Rheindalen JHQ, a very sedate weekend-long show. Great fun !!!

Redcurrant19 Mar 2019 6:05 p.m. PST

Sheffield Triples – a great show until they moved it out to that soulless indoor athletics arena – only took a couple of years to kill it off completely.

Had lots of traders, a great bring and buy, and the balcony by the bar was a great place to meet old friends and talk over a pint and a sausage roll.

Greatly missed

The old MFCA shows at the Armory in Philadelphia.

Spring Forward. A con in the Raleigh NC area, sister to Southern Front.

Col Durnford19 Mar 2019 7:48 p.m. PST

Agreed on the Denver con. At one time we had two really good ones and 4 best of class hobby shops.

Lost local control and last time I went to one, it was more of a cosplay convention then a gaming one.

KeepYourPowderDry20 Mar 2019 2:34 a.m. PST

Another Northern Militaire vote here

NavCon, in Milwaukee. For many years the largest all-naval wargaming event in the world.

Karellian Knight20 Mar 2019 6:23 a.m. PST

Firepower, held in the Woolwich artillery museum. Both now sadly gone.

masm611020 Mar 2019 7:17 a.m. PST

Here in the New England Area…..

TriCon run by Byron Champlain

Also a January Convention named
"Gathering of the Clans"(I think?) run by Jim Parcels(?) from Falcon Miniatures US for a few years…

Old Contemptibles20 Mar 2019 8:18 a.m. PST

DalCon

Vigilant20 Mar 2019 8:49 a.m. PST

Northern Military again, though it was tailing off significantly before the end. Same with Triples, though it was more the 2 days that killed it rather than the venue, on Sundays the exhibitors outnumbered the visitors.

capncarp20 Mar 2019 8:51 p.m. PST

"All from the '70s and '80s in Universities where you paid $15 USD USD for a room for the night and every square inch of the con was full."
Like Origins at Wiedner College in the 79-80?

Dagwood21 Mar 2019 12:02 p.m. PST

I used to go to two cons every year, both now gone. Roll Call in Dunstable, and Salvo in Colchester. Have to travel further, now, so rarely do !

Mirosav21 Mar 2019 5:17 p.m. PST

Another vote for Capcon in Columbus, Ohio.

Cardinal Ximenez23 Mar 2019 5:44 a.m. PST

PointCon at the USMA

Old Wolfman23 Mar 2019 11:47 a.m. PST

I miss the historicals at Origins, but I still have ATC(Advance The Colors) and CincyCon;now DayCon is in the mix,not to mention some local FoW tournaments in Indy,Newark, and Milford,OH.

Howler23 Mar 2019 9:07 p.m. PST

DragonCon in Atlanta and GenCon in Milwaukee. Got DBA and Silent Death at DC. GenCon was always the event of the year for me. Wish it had never left

PJ ONeill24 Mar 2019 7:35 a.m. PST

The cadets at West Point had a miniatures con, in the 80s and 90s. 9/11 put an end to that.

custosarmorum Supporting Member of TMP24 Mar 2019 8:23 a.m. PST

+1 nnascati. Although I think they Armory, and before that the student union, were at Widener College in Chester.

mindenbrush24 Mar 2019 5:20 p.m. PST

SDMS (South Dorset Military Society) Open Gaming weekend back in the mid 70's to mid 80's, twice a year. Turn up with your ancient army and get 3 games a day with people that could be complete strangers at the beginning of the game.

Warfare in Atlanta, Fort Worth Wars in Arlington Tx.

COL Scott ret25 Mar 2019 9:17 p.m. PST

Gold Con in South Florida in early 1980s

billclo08 Jun 2019 8:04 a.m. PST

I've got to say Origins when they moved it around the country, and there were games there besides tabletops and card games. Miniatures games are nearly extinct there, not much selection.

47Ronin09 Jun 2019 9:13 a.m. PST

Another vote for PointCon at West Point.

FYI, as thiesing mentioned above, the West Point Museum did announce a gaming weekend on its Facebook page for this weekend in memory of the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings. However, that was before the tragic accident that took the life of one cadet and injured several others earlier in the week.

Not sure if the games at the Museum went forward this weekend. If anyone was there, please let us know.

Thanks.

Dervel Fezian09 Jun 2019 10:26 a.m. PST

Another vote for Origins, used to be a fantastic minis venue.

47Ronin09 Jun 2019 12:16 p.m. PST

To answer my own question, it looks like the gaming weekend at the West Point Museum was a big success. Check out the Museum's Facebook page for photos of the event.

Boardgames played included Axis and Allies and The Great War, plus SYW and ACW games.

Hopefully, they'll make this a regular event.

Another vote for Pointcon.

Also Historicon when held at the Penn-Harris in Harrisburg.

Sigh.

kcabai11 Jun 2019 9:07 a.m. PST

Gencon at the Horticultural Hall, in Lake Geneva. A simpler time, first of my cons, and everything was so full of wonder. Camping out in Bigfoot State Park, Gary Gygax at the registration desk, movies at night in the mini hall, CinC and GHQ actually fighting it out, games run by the legends them selves, and a quarky vector graphic computer game of Star Trek.

Tumbleweed Supporting Member of TMP11 Jun 2019 5:24 p.m. PST

"Gencon at the Horticultural Hall"

My friends and I went to that one and played a 25mm Viking game. Yes, those were the days and during the con you could visit their game shop on main street.

I remember looking at a play-test copy of "Dungeon" set up on a table in the store and telling them it would never sell.

Not the first time I was wrong about something!
