I used to use the WalMart Colorplace flat spray paint for primer, but they have stopped making it, which was a bummer because it worked well for about $1.00 USD per can.

Now I need to find something new. I like to use the white primer.

Any suggestions?

I have used Rust-o-leum and Krylon with good results. I have been using Army Painter, also, with good results, but it is a lot more expensive. And none of the above is $1.00 USD.
The advantage of the Army Painter is that some of the primer colors have exact matches in the acrylic brush paint which helps if you use the primer as a main color for your figs. Good luck!

That's a bummer, I used the Walmart gray primer. Though I believe I have been getting gray primer from Meijer for around the dollar a can price too and it seems to be work as good as the stuff from Walmart. Speaking of Walmart if they have the Krylon "FLAT" clearcote it does dry to real nice flat finish. Get the Flat not the Matte though, the Matte finish does have a bit of shine to it. Not all Walmart's carry the Flat I have only found one in my area that carries it.

Thomas O, thanks for that hint. I have been using Testors dullcoat for years. I have two cans left, so I may try the Kryon FLAT.

Do you use Krylon FLAT paint for primer, or their primer&paint. I have used Rust-o-leum before, but it was a little thicker than I like. It seemed like it hid some of the details.

Wal-Mart sells this white spray primer, for $3.97 USD/can. Here is another Krylon brand, matte white paint + primer spray paint from Wal-Mart, for $4.24 USD/can. Even though these are listed on their web site, your local store may have them in stock. More than a dollar a can, but still affordable.

I checked the Dollar Tree web site: no spray paints listed, of any type. Cheers!

I've always used Humbrol matt white enamel.

I swear by gesso, but that is a brush on. I bought a large jar from Blink's Art and it has lasted for years.

I have grown to hate Army Painter primers. They just don't penetrate into the cracks and crevices of the figure. They also tend to chip off easily (especially the black) which means they are failing in their primary duty of sticking to the metal. I've found I need to use a brush-on primer before applying the AP primer, which defeats the purpose.

I really miss Floquil figure primers. I never had any of these problems with those.

I use Krylon sandable primers, they are very close to the old Floquil spray primers. They're about $4.00 USD a can.

I, like DesertFox, am a confirmed Gesso man. I used to use a number of spray primers, but I find I get a much more even and thinner coat with Gesso. And I don't have to worry about weather and temperature

GPM Flat Black enamel or Krylon "Pebble" have worked well for me.

Landorl, $1.00 USD a can!!!! Where have you stashed your Wayback Machine? haven't seen anything that cheap in a couple decades. Maybe $3.49 USD, that what I usually pay anyway.

Yup, $1 USD a can at Walmart.
