One of the games featured this month at the DWG was a Seven Years War set to recreating the Battle of Zorndorf using the Osprey ruleset 'Honours of War'.
If you would like to see how the game went and thoughts about the rules then just follow the link to the club blog. link Jonathan (JJ) |

Would these rules do for the earlier period…. say Marlborough's time? |

What size table did you use, isn't that an awfully large piece of real estate? |

Hi Parrskool, Although the rules are specfically aimed at the 7 Years War, I don't see why they couldn't be adapted for the War of Spanish Succession. Obviously the rules don't allow for the "fire by rank" and "platoon fire" systems of Marlburian times, but if you restricted "Superior Infantry firing" to represent platoon fire trained troops, you probably wouldn't be too far off. In hand to hand, you might only want to give the "Superior Infantry" melee modifier to Guard and other noted elite units. The same could be said for cavalry, with the rules allowing for the variation in class, weight and arms through "Superior", "Standard" & "Inferior". Given the quality & practices of earlier artillery, you might also apply a further reduction to their fire. After all, these were not the same field pieces as in the late 18th century. Vince

Hi Von Schwartz, The table we used was 6' x 4', as we were using 15mm figures. The maps of the period show the battlefield as being about 5 miles by 3.5 miles. Terrain restricted most of the fighting to an area of about 3.5 miles by 2.5 miles, so a 6' x 4' table worked fine. Vince |
