I have a pretty good knowledge of available figure ranges, but I wonder if I missing any figures that have cast-on shields. I want to do Carthaginians and other than Hinchliffe (not their best range) I can't find any that have cast-on shields. Any suggestions? Thanks. |

Minifigs in 25mm ah … back in the old days. Minifigs, Hinchliffe, Garrison… |

Some of the Navigator range (now sold by Magister Militum) have cast-on shields. |

Still got those garrison carthaginian spearmen! |

Thanks. Predictably, all the old ranges seem to have had cast-on shields. Foundry's Greeks, Romans, and Macedonians (Saleh's reinforcement range) have cast-on shields and are beauties. Elite miniatures celts have cast-on shields. But these are the only ones I have from "newer" ranges. From a producers perspective I would have thought this was the way to go – no damn shields to cast and pack separately. Also, as a painter and collector, I hate gluing on shields – I glue them on before painting so that one gets a good bond and the trouble of painting detail behind the shield makes no sense. Of course, pose options are a bit more limited. I will check the MM range, Dexter. Thanks. |

I too am an old timer. Oddly, cast on shields is not one of the things I wax nostalgic about. In fact, I consider them a pain in the butt. The companies that made them "over here back then" had notoriously crapped out molds, and this is one area notorious for huge lead tumors that were impossible to clean up. YMMV |

Mould quality is another matter and a problem shield on or off….to each their own, I suppose. I know that I am a minority. I think I also play with guys who might be clumsy. Shields and weapons pop off far too frequently. Not mine, since I fanatically glue things securely, but others use instant glue that never holds. And forget plastic figures….. beautiful as they are, we just played a game with some Victrix figs and the spears broke just looking at them. Other manufacturers are better, I will admit. Thanks for replying all. |

Since I cheat and use VVV or LBMS transfers, I find it immeasurably easier to put the transfers on the shields before attaching them to the figure. |

I have a bagful of what were described as Minifigs "Liby/Pheonician" spearmen 25mm. Believe they are from the mid 70's. The figure is based on Phil Barkers description, so are unarmored, wearing a tunic, with a feathered band around their forehead ! They come with a cast on large round shield and pointy boss. if I may ask, what part of the world do you reside in sausagesca ? |

I remember that spearman. I called him a Zulu Hoplite. I had 72 of them, half Minifigs, half Ral Partha. I scorned the much more accurate Garrison figures, because they weren't based on Phil Barker's AMPW. But they did have cast on shields. Come to think of it, Garrison had the Zulu Hoplite figure too. |

Try Newline. Whilst I'm not certain the shields are cast on I do know they don't list them as available separately as they do with some of their other ranges |

Try googling RAFM Brantford Ontario. Their historical miniatures 'Enemies of Rome' line has several true 25 MM Carthaginian figures with shield on. I believe they are the old Ral Partha figures. |

Thanks all. I'm in Canada. I have lots of Newline and they have all been cast with separate shields. The old Rap Partha ranges were lovely but very small. Closer to 22mm really. I had loads of them in the day. Their hoplites were amazing. |

While not ancients, Gripping Beast dark age figures with cast on shields are the bomb! I used to think I liked separate shields, but after getting the GB figures, I really like the cast-on shields!!! |
