Played my first game of RF&F in years last weekend – Prairie Grove, put on by our very own ACWBill – a very cool scenario and a most interesting game, except for some epically horrendous dice on my part.

Anyways, here is what I'm interested to know: The Union army had a great superiority in artillery, particularly rifled guns and just seemed to decimate any Confederate infantry in the open. Am I correct in my assumption that the artillery effect table makes no distinction between moving/attacking infantry versus stationary infantry in defense? Is there any option within the rules for defending infantry to go prone or otherwise claim any sort of cover?

Inquiring minds want to know …..

no distinction between stationary and normal movement; there is a +1 die modifier if the target has moved by the flank, about faced, or is involved in passage of lines.

no rules about going prone. There are modifiers about partial and full cover.

These are spelled out on the Quick Reference Sheet. The book, defines what cover benefits various terrain features provide.

ps – you can download the QRS as a PDF free, on-line:

the link above is the QRS for 15mm scale. The ground scale changes/distances vary by scale 28mm to 6 mm

Hi B, 1 March 2019

My buddy Rick makes great points to which I'd like to add one more. You are rolling a D10 when you fire. If you roll a 1, you can assume the target went prone;-)

Best, Lowell
