I'm surprised at the number who survived. I had always been under the impression that everyone ignored the volcanic activity until they couldn't. 2000 killed at Pompeii and Herculaneum. Up to 20,000 survived. Some were smart. Some made it to a Darwin Award. |

I thought it unfortunate that the house of papyri seems to contain someone's philosophy collection instead of history books or something more interesting. At least the ones that stayed have contributed to our knowledge of the period. I'm always amazed at how cities and towns were razed to the ground in ancient times with everyone killed or enslaved, but were quickly repopulated after a generation or so. I guess the reality is that a large chunk of the population fled and came back later, even if it was a generation or two later. |
