Often wondered. I suspect the real thing was not as impressive as this (which is still a great model though) but it was, by all accounts, still quite a challenge to any attacker.

But was it something "thrown together" in a very short period of time? One to two days of work, or had the Russians long planned to stand on this site?

Well, we always hear that the Duke had long seen that Mt St Jean was potentially a line of defence for Brussels. The plan was surely never to defend right on the border (OK, the plan was not to defend at all, but to attack…but………)

How much easier would the ridge have been defended with even the simplest earthworks? I accept reverse slope protection, but imagine something constructed where the 27th were slaughtered.
