This historical match up is a continuation of pike army exercises in preparation for the Battle of Magnesia.
A Ptolemaic army has invaded the Kingdom of Kush with surprising results.

Photos and report are posted to the blog.

Beautiful games and terrain as always! DBA3 is such a great, compact system for quick, manageable Ancients games.

I agree.

And I am finding that increasing the number of elements from 12 to 18 (Barker's Dozen Plus Six) improves the game more. Battles tend to develop in stages rather than one short punch up.

We like to play 24 elements, being two commands of any size you like, commands don't break individually but the army is defeated at 8 lost.

What figures did you use for the Southerners? Meroitic Kushites are one of my 'want to have' armies. I have Ptolemaic Egyptians already (in 15mm) and like the idea of the Kushites to "partner" them.

David,

That is aother alternative to the standard 12 a side. How do you integrate an ‘allied contingent'?

timurilank27 Feb 2019 12:54 a.m. PST

John,

The Meroitic cavalry are conversions (Classic Indian); milliput hair and shields. The foot troops are for the most part Old Glory Sudanese which I have in great quantity. I believe the archers are Old Glory Berber.

I have a bunch of those OG Berbers, both the archers and the javelinmen. I've thought about using them. I'll have to have a closer look at your photos. Using Indian cavalry is something I hadn't thought of. I have thought of using various Blemmyes and maybe some Kushite Egyptians.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Regards,
John

24 stands and one command also work well. Command distance becomes brutally important.
