Any suggestions please? Six depot companies saw service with Wittgenstein's 1st Corps. Since all three Battalions were already in the field the usual 5-8 companies sequence isn't available. Any idea what those companies used? Thanks John |

Thanks PoE but that great source doesn't appear to cover these (13th?) Depot companies. All best John |

Nafziger's "Napoleon's Invasion of Russia" : page 554 OoB for 4 October 1812 has Guard Depot battalions x 2 (926 men); page 561 OoB for December 1812 has Guard Infantry Reserve battalion no 1 & Guard Reserve battalion no 2 I can find no information on colour of pompoms for either the Guard (or line) 4th/Reserve battalions raised for 1812. One answer may be to dress these troops with forage caps. Unfortunately Jonathan Gingerich's excellent site has no details: link This may contain the answer link Description In the fourth volume of the series "Russian military suit" for the first time detail the evolution of uniforms walking formations of the Russian guard and army, including artillery and engineering forces, during the reign of Emperor Alexander I. emphasis in the text placed on the period of the Napoleonic wars 1805-1815. Just to add something to this: As the 4th/Depot battalions were quickly scraped up from the recruit training depots and sent into the line with most never coming near their nominal regiments, they would most likely be wearing the gray recruit outfit rather than the normal green. |
