I recently painted and based a 12-figure squadron of the new Austrian Horse Grenadiers that were recently released by Minden Miniatures.

The figures are available in packs of 3 riders plus horses in a Command Pack (MAC-007) and a pack of 3 Troopers (MAC-008)

As with all Minden Miniatures, the figures are sculpted by Richard Ansell to a 1/56 scale (scale, not millimeter height – there is a difference) which is roughly 30mm in height, but noticeably thinner than a standard 28mm figure.

Very nice – I'm very tempted.

Nice figures!

Oh dear! These are gorgeous figures, beautifully painted, which put my smaller scale figures to shame. In addition to all that, I had always assumed that Horse Grenadiers, like their foot counterparts, carried no flags. Do I need to go back and revisit my units?

I second Molinary- beautiful figures beautifully painted.
I think he may be right about the Horse Grenadiers not carrying guidons- even in the period up to the 1740s when all other companies were entitled to a flag (even if not all were carried in the field).
Constitutionally, the Grenadiers- horse and foot, and the Carabiniers of the Cuirassier regiments were strictly speaking still provisional amalgamated sub units made up of selected soldiers and officers drawn from the other 'permanent' companies. So the Grenadier company captain did not 'own' his company in the way captains of ordinary companies did- and wasn't entitled to a flag either.

But all that pseudo medieval detail aside- these chaps look great. The Guidon with the De Ligne family arms on the reverse is beautiful and spot on for the WAS and most of the SYW till c1760 iirc (think the Inhaber became St Ignon around then). One more point though- in the period that type of standard was used- I think the musicians of the regiment still wore reversed colours…..

Pengel & Hurt indicate that there was a kornet in each horse Grenadier company.

Reverse color uniforms for musicians were changed after 1755, however it is possible that some of the old uniforms carried over into the SYW until they wore out.

Yes- I think there was a nominal Kornett on the officer strength of the Grenadier company- but not necessarily anything for him to carry.

When cavalry across Europe moved from each troop/company carrying it's own standard/guidon in the field, to one per squadron or so- the number of cornets didn't reduce- they just became ordinary junior officers (and soon renamed Unter-Lieutenants in Austria). So having an officer with the title Kornett doesn't necessarily correlate to him carrying a flag.

Obviously Austrian cavalry changed in 1758 to having NCO standard bearers anyway- as your Grenadier appears to be. But I don't think infantry or cavalry elite companies had their own standards- for the reasons in the post above.

Figures that lovely and so well painted deserve a standard! Excellent work, Jim!
