Steve Dean no longer accepts commission painting jobs and I would love to know if there is anyone out there with his level of quality that does accept commissions

Good question, and here's another: what about Andrew Taylor?

I'm not sure if you are on Facebook but Davyd painting service in Spain is very good.

This is a strange posting.

The question seems to be…well….. who will paint figures to a certain standard that is indeed good, but far from exceptional?

I wonder if the famous BUG has put this onto a Napoleonic Gallery, with no cross posting. Most that I find on this, on its Facebook thing, is fantasy stuff by Steve Dean …with no suggestion that his palm could not still be crossed with silver.

This sounds almost like advertising or promoting a service….with countless, stress countless, other choices!

and half the fun is paint your own (if you can just find the time)

Those are beautiful figures in the link. How beautiful does the wargame figure need to be. Most of mine are viewed from 4 – 6 feet away when I'm playing a game. Maybe if I'm playing 15 mm DBA I'm sitting 2 feet away. But with mass troops.

An old friend of mine once said that you only need to paint figures in various shades of gray, which is what they would look like from the height of the player. I do like a bit of color. I have found it figures painted by Fernando Enterprises are excellent for gaming, and look pretty good close-up. Their price is quite good including the postage. I've had many hundreds of figures painted by them which look very nice in games.

Here are a couple recent examples. You can go to his site and see lots more.

I am quite sure there are painters as good as or better than Steve Dean. The real question you have to ask yourself is are you willing to pay their price? I have had Rafa Archiduque paint commission work for me and my opinion is that he is better than Mr. Dean but as with everything, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
You just need to do some shopping to find a painter you like.

Maha Bandula do you have a link to Andrew Taylor's site or Facebook page?

Wrgmr1 and Bobgnar those painters don't have the quality of work that I am after.

18th Century Guy Rafa Archiduque looks to be quite nice. I'll see what his prices are.

I don't think Andrew Taylor is taking on commission work anymore either but you can of course ask, that position may have changed.

wrgmr125 Feb 2019 11:35 a.m. PST

If you are willing to pay top price then go with Sascha Herme.

I guess you're right, seeing how his site has gone defunct. That being said, I think he's making exception for figure makers' new releases? Anyhow, I seem to recall his prices being 20 quid a figure.

Froggy72326 Feb 2019 12:41 a.m. PST

Sascha Herme only does 28mm so I'll send some figures his way.

What about 15mm?

So, how does one go about finding Andrew Taylor? I can't seem to find him?

Has anyone tried Old Guard Painters? Not the quality of Rafa Archduque or Sachsa Herm but Collector Quality is very good.

Fredloan, I've tried Old Guard Painters and they are very good. As you say OGP is not to the level of Rafa or Sachsa but then neither are his prices!
I would recommend OGP to anyone but it all depends on what level of painting you want on your gaming table. Are you a gamer or collector? Each have different requirements and usually budgets.

I'd be more than happy to help you out with 15mm project.

OGP has two levels of quality, gaming and collector. I think the Collector level is very nice for under $5 USD per figure. I use these for gaming.

If I was a collector for 28-54mm figures then I would spend the bigger bucks for Rafa or Sascha. I have over 3,000 AB figures that are already painted some I have done. I paint at the OGP Collector level but, I just do not have much time.
