Which person or topic set during the English Civil War would you like to see turned into a major motion picture? |

Prince Rupert or General At Sea Robert Blake |

George Monck. At a very critical time in the nation's history, may have very well have helped prevent England from slipping into anarchy. |

I would just like to see any movie on the ECW. Lets get Peter Jackson working on it. |

I think some set-pieces featuring a big battle or important siege – more like Zulu, less like Cromwell. - Ix |

Adventures of fictional characters swept along by historic events in the setting of the ECW would also be fun. Like Alatriste the Three Musketeers. - Ix |

The career of Waller would make a good story line. |

Montrose would be a good one, though a Netflix series style Game of Three Kingdoms could be amazing. Of course most previous films have been terribly done. |

Cornish campaigns…great storyline and characters |

Montrose and Macolla. Can't believe Hollywood haven't picked this up. What more is there to want? Villainous baddies; Argyle and Auchinbreck. Flawed heroes of a doomed cause; Montrose and Macolla. Dramatic scenery – Scotland. Everyone loves a highlander. Perhaps end the film at Kilsyth for a Hollywood happy ending? Just need to add the romance element, anyone any ideas? |
Steamingdave2 | 24 Feb 2019 7:42 a.m. PST |
@Charge the guns. Hollywood would almost certainly end it at Kilsyth, producing yet more distortion of Scottish history. There is so much myth around Montrose already; don't think we need any more. |

Events leading up to the Battle of Edgehill. |

Another vote for Prince Rupert. What a career! Militarily active 1619 to 1674, then gets involved in the Admiralty and Royal Society and takes up with an actress 26 years younger! |

Monck, the march from Coldstream and the Restoration. |

@Steamingdave2 I know what you mean, but the original post did say "major motion picture", so I wasn't expecting historical accuracy, but a rip-roaring yarn, with potential bodice ripping (is that still a thing?). The more I think about it, the more sense it makes. The battles were quite small so you wouldn't need many extras to do it 1:1. The battles were often over quite quickly so no complicated manoeuvring to play out. Still struggling with the female lead though? @12thFoot – agree Rupert was an amazing character and had an incredibly interesting life. I think you would have to pick just one bit for a film though. Tell me more about the actress? |
22ndFoot | 26 Feb 2019 9:10 a.m. PST |
The actress was Peg Hughes, reputedly the first woman to appear legally on the stage in England. Here is her Wiki page: link |

Well, I'd have thought that would have been right up Hollywood's boulevard, 22ndFoot. Strong female lead, breaking new ground, bit of royalty thrown in for good measure. Can't believe they're not snapping this stuff up. |

Rupert also had a fling with Frances Bard, daughter of Sir Henry Bard (he of the white flags with red cross crosslets, loss of arm at Cheriton and died of heatstroke in India). |
Grymauch | 05 Mar 2019 5:51 a.m. PST |
Given the utter crapness that movies have descended into, I would have thought a top quality TV series on Prince Rupert would be ideal. Maybe HBO would pick it up and with the resources for impressive scenes. Def not the BBC who would have a female lead as Prince/ess Rupert with some wonk with his diversity checklist at every stage in the background! Not to mention 10 extras refighting Edgehill with oblong wicker shields so that the great unwashed can tell who is who! Other than that I have absolutely nothing against the BBC. |
12thFoot | 07 Mar 2019 4:22 a.m. PST |
Could be worse, Grymauch. They might ask Dan Snow to do a prog on Rupert |

They would have to call it "Dreaming of Purell" 350 years before Purell's invention we see the Earl of Montrose and his struggle against both OCD and germophobia set against the backdrop of his brilliant campaigns. |
