Back in March I posted plans for this tank for Vietnam. (M48 A3)

Seems it is nearly there and a nice close up to show the level of detail. Resin and Pewter casting;

Very nice M48 model !

Legion 4 sounds quite a cool weapon…any chance of a picture?

Don't have a pic of my SKS with the "spike" bayonet, but here is one on eBay. As with most SKSs the bayonet on my SKS is attached to the weapon with a mechanism for folding it.

Must put in my penn'orth.

(and let me stress that although I always post images for Ged, I have no connection to the company. Indeed I have only ever exchanged e mails with Ged Cronin. We have never actually spoken!)

I have been painting my Marines (the entire series other than the Mule crew) and the quality of casting only becomes apparent as you start slapping on the paint.
I have my favourites already, but if anyone wants to try a "sampler or two" try any on the three RTOs. The buttons, the buckles on their belts, the detail on the M16s, the coiled cable to the phones above all.

The challenge is to do them justice with the paintbrush and while we are at it;

an NVA "grenadier";

No M48s but M60s. And yes we did hitch a ride on them. Better than walking ! But again I was on active duty '79-'90.

Probably worth showing another image of what is intended as the final product.

My earlier posting of March14th above showed it with an old fashioned portable Television above the gun mount, like the photo above. Great idea if there was baseball on.

Hope shortly to post first pictures of my Marines. Much highlighting still to do.

I decided today some of these figures are almost intimidating for any painter. OK, I expected jungle boots, but these have the diagonal strap over the ankle as well. Some even have the brass drainage eyelets, which must be less than 1mm in diameter. The pistol holsters all have "US" in a circle stamped on the flap. The detail on the RTOs is simply incredible throughout.

The helmet covers. I have learnt to do them as issued. But practically every photo of Hue suggests overall light sand would be more accurate. I think I even see one WWII/Korea cover! There will be so much drybrushing of all my careful work mixing shades of green….that I could have saved the effort!

The challenge is to do them justice. Scary range of figures!

PS, I do know it was not a portable TV on the gun barrel….

I have today being trying to do the stencilling on the LAWs. I took domestic grief and incredulity, but I think it worked brilliantly.

You did not put any hands on the wristwatches. Sheer carelessness.

Fun today came from the ammo belts. Brass, black, brass, copper from inside out. Took ages. Promise me you will not suddenly release more US Marines. 'er indoors is getting a bit peeved. Seems we need to go out together and talk…not sure about the topic but seems essential.

The NVA continue to be reinforced.

Two mortar teams, here is the heavier piece. Cleverly some of the earlier bare-headed figures have also reappeared in a range of headgear. Adds variety and I do particularly "like" the pith helmet look. Not too sure how much I "like" the individuals who wore them but, as I once would have said, it was a long time ago and hey they started it (OK discuss, I do admit)….

I am holding on for more Marines. My dioramas are all on hold until…..does any one "do" ARVN? Basically little guys with huge US helmets and very tight trousers/pants/fatigues and dated weaponry.

Skarper17 Oct 2019 9:28 p.m. PST

Really nice group – especially like the accessories which are often left out.

Small point – Vietnamese are able to squat with the feet flat on the floor. Few westerners can. I don't know why this is. But it is effortless for them to do this – easier even than standing up.

Love the shoes – if they are the rubber soled canvass upper jungle boots – they are still in use – I have 2 pairs and wear them most days.

Skarper

many thanks for your kind input
the extras were a must for me
as it gives gamers and modellers
more scope for vignettes and
mini diorama pieces on the table
the boots are indeed the jungle
boots mentioned…

Another NVA and I do like that pith helmet look. Heck I may yet drop my principles and add some to my collection….

………just checking the claymores are the right way round!!

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP31 Oct 2019 2:18 a.m. PST

Hence the raised lettering as I recall, so that even in the dark……..

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP31 Oct 2019 8:15 a.m. PST

Yes that was one of the first things we learned about the M18 Claymore. So yes, the raised letters certainly helped when emplacing them !

I don't know if the US Army still uses them ? But I'd think they would be just as effective in the urban insurgencies in A'stan, Syria and Iraq. We were told to use our imagination when emplacing them. They could do a lot of damage in the jungle or forests as well as in MOUT. Of course with MOUT there is always the concern of collateral damage.

Latest painted figure is a threat to that M48 tank. He is carrying the B40, the early RPG-2. Now we do know that the green/khaki random mix is exactly right for Tet NVA too!
